Jonas H Myers of 403 North Main street Elkhart died of heart disease while seated in a chair at 7 30 this morning. The 74 year old leaves a widow three daughters two sons a brother and sister. Funeral arrangements pending.
Two clerks from separate dry goods stores spend an hour being entertained by a visitor posing as Miss France of Indianapolis. The impostor reveals herself with a deep voice, flirts with clerks, and exposes the disguise only when confronted by the workers in each shop. The spree ends without discovery until a clue surfaces.
A D Armstrong of 115 Hudson Street praised for six prizes at the Chicago poultry show. His rose combed brown leghorns and black wyandottes took two firsts three seconds and one third. A five year old wyandotte hen repeated last year’s top score. Medals included bronze and silver. Elkhart links a Kalamazoo jail arrest to a separate report about Mrs William Clark.
A search for gold reports a party leaving Chicago with provisions and outfits in January. They travel to Seaguay where a brother shelters them and plan to meet at Lake Linden before continuing together then separating to prospect. William Wallace, 84, of Harrison Township, dies of heart failure en route to Yellow Creek German Baptist Church services.
Papers in the voluntary assignment of Ernst Kiefer the shoe dealer have been filed in the circuit court. Blake Johnson and Wilson represent and Aaron Work serves as trustee in the filing.
Miss Lizzie Drapert of Lansing Michigan, well known here, died last Thursday at North Lansing from consumption. The funeral Sunday was largely attended and friends sent unusually beautiful floral tributes.
Mrs. Hilton, 72, mother of Mrs. C. D. Swayne of Cleveland avenue, slipped on stairs and fell to the cellar floor. She sustained fractures of both bones in the right leg above the ankle and faces a serious injury.
Roy Sesline, former cabin boy on the ill fated City of Duluth, visited Duluth after witnessing the wreck off St Joseph Michigan. He brought a photo of the vessel, described the hull rent, and said most cargo was saved though the urn was lost. He noted no injuries beyond fright and planned to join another liner crew soon.
County Attorney Lov W. Vatit reports Holdeman shortage likely to be covered by March 24 and urges commissioners not to sue the bondsmen before ninety days expire. He notes the American Surety Company policy and awaits vice president Wisehart’s return to California before taking action. If not settled by March 24, the county should promptly sue on the bond.
Superintendent Study of Fort Wayne visited Elkhart in December and urged the state board to grant accreditation. If approved, the Elkhart Institute would gain same rights as commissioned high school graduates at Purdue State Universities and State Normal. The board will investigate its private school status before final listing.
Miss Bessie Boyer of Adamsville died at 7 o clock this morning at the home of her parents J S Boyer and a wife, after a rheumatic illness.
Two incidents on city streets left victims with serious leg injuries. An unconscious man, burned by a steam pipe, recovered quickly and was treated by Dr Short. Mrs Hirsm Osworn on Virginia avenue slipped on Middlebury street and fractured her left leg below the knee.
The case charging Thomas and Black with theft of silk goods from the B and O was brought in Mayorschafer's court in South Bend. On the prosecutor's motion a dismissal was entered Saturday.
Citizens with racing stock turned North Main street into a makeshift race course drawing crowded spectators from both sides. Horsemen pressed for a side street to race earlier but, denied, improvised a course. Several narrowly averted accidents sparked strong street commentary today.
John Weikel remained in stable condition after an accident at the Elkhart and Western Railroad yards Saturday. Doctors warned amputation of the injured foot may still be required depending on his recovery.
W. B. Myler of Chicago has been employed as expert accountant by the county board to inspect the books of ex treasurers Romaine and Campbell and the auditors of their terms. He will be paid five dollars per day plus hotel expenses and may select an outside assistant. The contract follows the expiry of W. H. Ernst’s term and is contingent on County Attorney Vail’s return.
In Bristol during a heavy snow storm a frail elderly woman known as Grand ma Hussan wandered after losing her way. A friend found her and brought her to safety where Charles Long took her home. Other local notes include births, illnesses, and entertainment by the Arion Minstrels and Dean Wood's phonograph show in Union.
Mrs. F. T. Atkinson’s child suffers a grip while Barbara Lehman returns from Shipshewana and stays indefinitely. Delegations visit Goshen and Leesburg for meetings and fellowship. Endeavorers at the Christian Church host a well attended program featuring “endeavor locomotives” to aid missions. Holdeman Mennonite Church near town conducts meetings led by Rev. Brunk with growing attendance. Local agents promote Rev. George Lambert’s famine relief book from his India experiences.
Sailor Michigan area updates list William Armstrong and Viola Porter visiting relatives, Greenawalt from Marcellus stopped by, and social events include the Ladies Aid meeting with Mrs. Henry Sooy. The Republicans of the Thirteenth district met at Plymouth and elected Elmer Crockett of South Bend district chairman for two years. Crockett was unanimously chosen on motion by Cyrus D. Roys and will also serve on the State central committee.
Lizzie Kidder receives a decree from Judge Wilson in the divorce case Mark O Kidder vs Lizzie Kidder. The cross complaint by the wife alleges grounds for dissolution of marriage and the parties reside in the city.
