Furious winds whip through Lorre, Pennsylvania, fanned by a firestorm that threatens many brick and frame buildings. Fire crews battle the blaze as residents evacuate nearby streets amid shifting embers and smoke.
Fire sweeps Galveston wharves and Edinboro town causing more than 100000 dollars in losses. Strong winds hinder firefighting as frozen water mains complicate efforts to control the blaze risking state school buildings and local cotton storage facilities. Wind-driven flames threaten to spread across wharves and warehouses with total losses approaching 250000 dollars.
City board of works met to decide on requests for about thirty street lights and to confirm locations of seven of ten lamps authorized earlier. They may adjust positions to add ten more lamps, aiming to improve lighting in residential streets, with no final action yet.
The City Democracy and County Democratic committees plan a banquet at Knights of Pythias hall Goshen on January 4 evening of the district convention. Tickets sold in Wickhart at 25 cents each with many already sold. Event organized by Democrats at large not county central committee. Free pie and hospitality extended to Democrats and delegates attending the event.
Subpoenas were issued today for numerous local wholesale and retail milk dealers and large consumers as government investigates the alleged Chicago milk trust. The federal grand jury may be asked to indict several big milk dealers for anti trust violations and railroads may be charged with granting secret rates to dealers in violation of interstate commerce law.
Northern Indiana company secures orders for earlier city line cars to improve service. The revised timetable, approved by General Supt Reynolds and Me May dock, starts Monday with crews reporting at 9:50 and leaving ends at 6 00. Regular 20 minute trips mostly kept, with ends departing at 7 50. new track work on West Franklin Street to proceed.
A logging truck failed to stop on a hill in Travers City Michigan and crashed into a following snow plow. George W Phillips, a local conductor, was among the injured or killed in the crash as brakes failure triggered the wreck.
City Judge Hughes must begin full daily reports of all cases tried, including trial dates, docket pages, forfeitures, and related facts. Printed report blanks will be issued in book form for use across cities and towns to streamline state finances and arrest statistics.
The owners of diverse groceries and meat markets decide not to open on New Year’s Day following their usual Christmas practice. Patrons are asked to provide announcements for Saturday and Sunday by tomorrow noon as most shops will close the entire day. No Truth Saturday edition will be issued.
A Mishawaka meeting of anti-saloon workers discussed the remonstrance campaign against Osceola saloons amid dry conditions in Elkhart county. George Hicks of the South Bend district attended as Osceola residents pledge to rid themselves of the nuisance. Officials plan to gather 1800 Penn township voter names to file a remonstrance, with Mishawaka cards used for township purposes only and no city impact. The league aims to assist Osceola while asking Mishawaka citizens for help.
Winds up affairs as Judge Hughes of the city court orders wholesale arrests in the coming days. Many defendants who failed to pay fines and costs face commitments. partial payments were made by some, others later settled due amounts. If absent, the signers of the docket may be held to cover the deficiency.
The Brunswick Blane Colender company plant visit sparked a push to replace part of the board with younger city businessmen. A half older half younger slate was formed for the January 25 annual meeting to decide on new directors. The firm has exceeded contract terms, adding improvements. sixty five workers currently, with forty more to join once machines arrive, and the contract filed with the county recorder.
Samuel Prevert a Nappanee businessman narrowly escaped death when he stepped in front of a moving Baltimore and Ohio train at Nappanee. He was thrown to the track center, grabbed a brake shoe, and was dragged a short distance on his back. He sustained badly bruised shoulders.
Vague accusations fly as city officials debate a looming inquiry into city records and accounts. Advisors to Mr Gray defend his stance against dictates from retiring officials while tensions mount over potential consolidation of treasurer and clerk roles and scrutiny of contract dealings.
A sharp cold wave sent temperatures plummeting across Elkhart and Indiana with readings as low as eleven below zero at Miles Observatory and widespread zero to below zero across streets and buildings.
