Mrs. Mary J. Holdeman sues Alfred Lowry to cancel a December 1897 deed on her residence lot at Barnes second addition Goshen. She claims the deed was given to secure her husband’s alleged debt of 5000 dollars and seeks reconveyance and nullification to quiet her title. The item was previously transferred to Holdeman’s bondsmen.
Noah J. Palmer, 66, at the engine dispatcher's office, was stricken with paralysis Friday afternoon. Dr. Thomas attended him as he rests. George P. Haines and Lualla McKnight wed at 10 this morning on Sycamore Street, Rev. William Galpin officiating. They depart for Chicago to visit Frank Folsom and wife.
Ramsay Kepner the Calvert’s saloon bartender headed out at Christmas dawn to hunt quail eight miles east of town but found his ammunition forgotten. He recalled it was stored in Mel Binham’s barn, prompting a return trip without any bags.
Fred Attenberg aged sixty one and a resident seven miles west of the city died suddenly last evening entering the Pleasant Valley church. He leaves a wife eleven children and was born in Germany in 1836. Funeral services will be held at the house at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning then at the church with burial in Pleasant Valley cemetery.
The Ley residence on Franklin Street hosted a Saturday evening ceremony at 7 20 for Marie Ley and Charles E Rankin officiated by Rev BE Rice of the English Lutheran Church. The couple will live with the groom’s mother on Sixth Street Amidon Dor mus. Fannie Doremus and William H Amidor moved to Chicago after a 6 PM wedding at the bride’s parents on Indiana Avenue officiated by Rev O E Rice with only close relatives present. The pair plan to reside in Chicago.
A gas lighter ignited evergreen decorations on a pillar near the left chancel as the congregation arrived. The flames engulfed the pillar but were quickly fought back, scorching the ceiling and marble work and staining the maroon carpet. Damage described as slight. service proceeded after cleanup.
Six youths aged fourteen to eighteen were ice breaking near the Middlebury street bridge on the Elkhart river when a ducking occurred. They fell into the water but all reached the bank safely.
A complaint was filed against a saloon keeper for allowing gambling in his establishment. He was arrested last night by Sergt Whiteman. His trial is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
Mr Orris W Herr of Orange City and Miss Ella Kilmer were married at 8 this morning at the bride's parents home in Bango township. Rev A A Cober of the First Baptist Church performed the ceremony. Herr is superintendent of Orange City schools and Kilmer taught in the Fifth ward school. The couple left for Iowa after the ceremony.
Mr Ross J Balla of this city married Miss Lelia Hanna of Casnovia Michigan in a quiet ceremony at Grand Rapids on Wednesday evening December 22. Balla a respected young man formerly chief clerk in the engine dispatcher's office here and now a Grand Rapids fireman.
Thomas Dunn, arrested Sunday for public intoxication, refuses to cooperate with atonement and will endure bread and water. He has been moved from a blankets and bedclothes cell to a bare iron cot, showing strong nerve and likely continued obstinacy.
A fiery young team owned and driven by George S. Smith of Baldwin's Prairie bolted on Main Street around 11 am Saturday. The frightened horses, near the North Main Street bridge by a passing streetcar, caused a packed roadway to pause as onlookers awaited the outcome.
Father William Corby of the 8th C. died at 3 40 yesterday afternoon at Notre Dame University after a battle with pneumonia. He had led the Notre Dame G A R Post, the only post composed of men from a religious order, recently formed at Notre Dame.
G C A Barthel, of seven miles east of the city, died Monday of heart disease. Born in Germany in 1829, he came to Goshen in 1849 and later moved to Jefferson township where he lived. He was twice married and had nine children. Funeral services were held this morning.
Walter Lefebre fourteen year old son of Mons. EH A Lefebre was struck from behind by Carl Bostwick at the skating rink. He fell hard on the back of his head and was carried to the rink house. He recovered enough to go home with help.
A large party rode to Goshen last evening in honor of Miss Marie Kevanagh on vacation in the city and Miss Winifred Bradeen of Cleveland. The group included Charles Canse Clarence Upson Guy McBride Emil Anderson Karl McBride Albert Stillman Alfred Magnus Ted Lehman Bertha Clark Winifred Bradeen Marie Kavanagh Maude Chamberlain Paula Thomas Asa Upson and Hilsie McBride. They spent time at the county seat and returned, arriving about 3 30 this morning.
A farmer driving between two buildings on East Pigeon Street yesterday afternoon miscalculated the gap. The hay load became tightly wedged and the team started causing the entire load to fall to the ground. He rerouted to reload and continue.
Harry B. Lyons of Goshen, Indiana, is developing a foot powered stamp cancelling device in Elkhart for a government post office test. The small machine, tested in Goshen, must be delivered to Washington by January 1 and work continues with local machinists.
A frightened horse owned by George Wilkinson of Jefferson Street bolted from Ilkhart Carriage Works as noon bells rang. Driver Alexander, a visitor to Wilkinson’s home, rode to recover the animal through Riverside streets, guiding it back before returning to the Wilkinson residence. Thomas Wilkinson, a clerical employee, was to be brought home for dinner.
Mrs. Blanch Borden, sister of Conductor B. D. Bulla of this city, died at her home five miles east of Carlisle on Sunday. The funeral was held today at 1:30 PM at Hamilton Church near Carlisle.
Indianapolis December 29 Republicans at the Indiana state conference endorsed President McKinley’s administration and currency reform. Senator Fairbanks spoke with a message from McKinley about upholding the sound money plank. The assembly set dates for county primaries January 22 and district conventions January 29 with reorganizational meetings planned in February.
Fall River Massachusetts December 29 Workers conference committee reports unanimous approval of accepting the wage cut noting it would be poor business policy to strike now They warn they will demand restoration of the present schedule when a profit margin allows and may strike if necessary
The Canadian interior minister Sifton and his secretary Mackenna were received at their hotel by Assistant Secretary Meikeljohn. Secretary Alger, risen from his sick bed, hosted luncheon but could not proceed with plans for relief expedition details due to weak health.
Havana reports from Spanish sources that General Aguirre's forces in Santa Clara Province captured an insurgent camp. Twenty insurgents were killed and three captured, while Spanish casualties were two dead and seven wounded. The engagement involved insurgents led by Napoles. an insurgent captain and seven armed privates reportedly surrendered.
Washington reports say Britain is speeding up Gibraltar fortifications with 5000 Spanish workers crossing daily. Heavy artillery is being placed and a large dock is under construction, with defense plans enabling protection of a large British fleet under their guns.

Sailor Michigan reports a large attendance at the Paradise Sunday school Christmas entertainment with a fine literary program. Mr and Mrs Charles Minunich of South Bend are holidaying with his parents. Deputy Sheriff Warner of Cassopolis arrived late in the night.

Local travel and social visits noted including Edwardsburg and Kalamazoo departures and juror service in Cassopolis.
