Albert Hagerdorn and Anna Hagerdorn sue Ada M Brown alleging joint ownership of city real estate in 1900. They claim Brown intoxicated Albert to sign away his rights and coerced Anna to sign under threat, seeking recovery of their share.
Jennie Shelmadine sues F. E. Shellmadine for support after claiming marriage on April 18, 1890 and abandonment on November 22, 1900. She says she supports two children and alleges he kept household furniture valued at $100, asking the court to order payment of a fair support sum.
Goshen News reports Elkhart representative-elect Vernon W. Vanfleet says the Federation of Labor asked him to draft a bill on primary election law. He opposes primaries as less just than convention voting but supports safeguarding delegate selection and precinct committeeman roles to ensure fairness.
Wm Purdy has filed for divorce from his wife Jenny L Purdy. The Middlebury Independent notes the case with sharp personal criticism and hopes the court restricts him from remarriage for decades.
Mrs. C. J. Hostettler of this city learned the whereabouts of her brother Chas Hinman who had been separated years ago. Hinman was raised in an orphan's home and adopted by a Wisconsin preacher who kept the matter secret. Mrs. Hostettler's husband travels for the Elkhart Institute and learned of Hinman's location in Clear Lake Wisconsin. The family tree includes the mother who died and siblings still living.
County Clerk Dennert collected 3137.23 in the just closed month and 1546.66 in October, funds belonging to litigants except his salary. Directors of the Home Telephone Co of Elkhart County met Friday to discuss improvements. They plan a metallic line between here and Milford linking with Warsaw for a new line to Indianapolis, promising a direct routes with few intermediate stops to the state capital.

J R Smith of Benton Harbor formerly of Goshen reports the loss by fire of his rooming house and contents in Benton Harbor a week ago Wednesday. No insurance but 800 dollars worth saved. Loss 800 dollars. Fire started in a defective chimney and spread rapidly. Firemen’s gallant efforts saved a portion of household furnishings. He will rebuild and resume his profitable business.
D A Zartman formerly foreman in Ariel Cycle plating has taken a similar post with Beuscher Manufacturing in Goshen. He will continue to reside in Goshen for the time being.
The George Quackenbush versus Travelers Insurance Company case from Elkhart ended Saturday with a compromise. Attorneys Vernon W. Vanfleet and Lou W. Vail reported settlement on an accident policy worth 1500 dollars, paid as 500 dollars in cash.
Homer G. Watson of the hardware firm Jones and Watson died after two weeks illness at his home in Jaurette Court at 11 p m. He succumbed to pneumonia followed by brain tuberculosis. He leaves a wife and two children, his parents Mr and Mrs J R Watson, and brother Walter of White Pigeon. Funeral arrangements are noted with viewing times before departure to White Pigeon for services. He was a Samaritan lodge and Masonic member and had recently moved to town.
In federal court on Wednesday Corey Young pleaded guilty to passing counterfeit money and was released after having been confined since October. Judge Baker deemed the summer jail term sufficient. Hummer’s fate remains undecided as authorities note Young was his accomplice.
The Grand Trunk freight house in Mishawaka was entered between midnight and 1 am Sunday. A box of boots and shoes from the Mishawaka Woolen factory was stolen after thieves pried off the lock. Police in surrounding cities alerted to look for tramps with new footwear amid recent regional robberies.
The county commissioners held their regular December meeting and John Fieldhouse assumed office while Charles Walley was named commissioner of the northern district. Applications for liquor licenses for the next term were filed by Frank Melvin of Wakarusa and Lewis Wagner of Goshen.
The death of Mrs. Mary Ault of Elwood is reported. She contributed to early pioneer days and advanced the cause of Christianity in that region.
Joseph Haas aged 17 son of Ezra Haas of Wabash shot himself while hunting the shoulder and arm. The arm was amputated as a result of the injury.
While Frank Nukolls of Shelbyville hunted two birds flew into his game bag and became entangled, leading to their capture.
Supt Braden resigned at a police commissioners meeting and Charles Silvers, previously with the Water Company, was elected to succeed him. Silvers qualified and bonded this afternoon and will assume duties immediately amid a broader push for reform in city law enforcement.
A note found on the East Jackson Street bridge near C. G. Conn's factory is believed to be a hoax or a misplaced suicide note. It describes a 17 year old girl contemplating death by drowning in the St Joe River and asks for prayers. Investigators note the handwriting shows education and the letter lacks a signature.
J. H. Payne of Indiana avenue reports finding his horse lost last Saturday. The horse, formerly owned by a farmer seven miles east, likely wandered home after being released from a barn. Payne expects to recover the animal today.
The Chicago American hails Albert Nolan of Niles born in Elkhart as presenting the bravest act in Philippine warfare. After a detachment was fired on and a church siege lasted two days, Nolan and a native guide escaped from the church, found reinforcements after a 20 mile pursuit, and helped save comrades as insurgents planned to burn the bamboo church.
The vestry of St James Episcopal church in Goshen extends a call to Rev Edgar M Thompson now rector in charge at Naperville Illinois with two additional missions. He was in Goshen Saturday en route home from the east and is described as an able preacher and a gentleman. Thompson previously assisted Dr Stone of St James Chicago. An answer is expected within a few days.
William Younger, a young man living south of the city, reported to police on Saturday night that he was held up in a South Main street shooting gallery for 27 dollars. Officers doubted his story given contradictory details and asked him to go home and return Monday to pursue help if he still believed the loss occurred. He did not return.

Justices elected to fill vacancies this year now hold two year commissions and their terms end after two years. The secretary of state has received many inquiries and refuses to issue two year commissions, upholding the law.
John O. Pollock son of Dr G W Pollock the north side veterinary at Goshen had a hand torn off while working about a corn shredder on the farm of ex County Commissioner P F Nye in Jefferson township Tuesday afternoon Pollock has worked for Nye for eight years and was recently married to Nellie Jetty Nye's niece.
County Clerk Dennert hunted at Fredrick Manrow’s Benton township farm with dogs George D. Lint’s pug and J M Gowings fox terrier. The group of George Prickett and Dr W B Kyler bagged one sap sucker. Dennert blamed gear and dogs for poor shooting, but enjoyed the outing and a planned game supper by Deputy Kinney.

The county board met in regular session with J. B. Cobb named president. Charles Walley of Elkhart retired after two terms and John W. Fieldhouse was elected to the northern district seat. The meeting included a general discussion of county needs.
