Mason and Clark were arrested after subways? free Lake Shore transportation to White Pigeon for a McQueen funeral and found with open jack-knives but no use attempted.
Merchants in Elkhart urge an early closing rule for the winter reg meeting employees halfway on hours. Clerks and workers should form an organization and present a united proposal to employers, who largely support the shift to shorter night hours without conflict. Support from merchants and customers is anticipated.
A sleigh party visiting the Marx home on the Osceola road near five miles west ended when a gasoline lamp leaked and ignited. Mrs. Marx was badly burned while guests aided her, and Mr. Marx helped extinguish the flames. A separate report notes Laporte ladies offering to donate skin for a burned boy, their act praised as practical charity.

A small blaze in the drying room of the county asylum’s basement triggered a temporary alarm. Attendants panicked, inmates stirred, but level-headed staff extinguished the fire before damage occurred. The incident could have caused serious trouble if the county house burned.

The Michigan City News notes Indiana laws require county action after farmers build a mile or more of road and maintain it for a set period. Upon petition the county must declare the road a free gravel highway and fund maintenance from annual road taxes. If projects extend to marketing points and improve yearly, several miles of free gravel roads emerge, as seen in Laporte and Allen counties.
A series of land and lot transfers were recorded in Middlebury and Elkhart counties. Transfers include Sol M Kinifiman to Ino Gwantimar for 1300 dollars, Geo F Alderman to John Canefield, and Jonathan S Mather to Charles A Mather for 4000 dollars, among others. Property names include Middlebury, Elkhart, York, and Hickhare with sums ranging from 200 to 34700 dollars.
