Fire destroys farm buildings near Elkhart an all livestock saved
A devastating fire at Edgar Thompson's farm five miles north of Elkhart began in a grain stack behind the barn and spread to the barn, stables, shed and other outbuildings. The 60 by 30 foot loft barn and a 50 by 25 foot horse stable burned, about 50 loads of new hay were lost, total damage about 3500 dollars insured. A cigar or burning match likely ignited loose straw blown from a stack into the road. About 100 Elkhart residents watched, and a large camp meeting near the scene continued with sermons and talks through the day.

Fire Outbreak Threatens Farms North of Elkhart
Lou Bishop and his crew were burning brush on a newly cleared tract nine miles north of Elkhart when a gusty wind pushed the blaze beyond control. Help arrived at 11 o clock Friday and the fire was contained by 5 or 6 o clock after 140 rods of fencing burned. Heroes saved buildings on Justice Redfield’s farm adjoining the Bishop property from ignition.

Three laborers sued Russell and Jennison contractors for $2 a day unskilled labor on Beardsley Avenue public work. Judge Brumbaugh overruled a demurrer and awarded $34 plus costs. The Act Chapter CXXII H 128 of 1901 sets wages at 20 cents per hour with penalties and attorney’s fees for recovery.

Massive dam project drives St Joseph river work plan
A new dam across the St Joseph river at Twin Branch by the St Joseph and Elkhart Power Co will span 700 to 800 feet and rise 18 feet. Construction will start in spring with 50 workers already on site and a saw mill set to cut 6 000 feet of timber daily. The power house on the south bank will serve a 25 mile radius and back water protection is guaranteed by liability recovery for any land damage.

Bold robbery targets Middlebury wool warehouse
A warehouse in Middlebury was broken into Saturday night and between 80 and 100 pounds of wool in fleeces was stolen. Sheriff Elliott offers a $10 reward for the capture of the thief. Foreman Krutz Injured in Crushing Accident at Columbia City
George Krutz of Goshen, foreman for Frank Brumbaugh, was severely injured while unloading heavy curbing. A 12 foot stone slipped, crushing his left toes. the middle toe broke with bone protruding. He required two hours of dressing. Doctors expect he can work in the office until fit for field work. Brumbaugh has about 10 men and aims to finish by November 1.

Diptheria Fears Rise After Two Goshen Deaths
