Intense unrest in Karnes County Texas as mobs whip a detained preacher and arrest or threaten Black residents after reports of assaults on white women. A negotiated truce ends with a promise of departure by Black residents and calm temporarily restored.
James A Taylor a merchant tailor from Elkhart was killed when a train struck him on the Illinois Central near Carroll switch Vaiden Mississippi He supposedly sat on a cross tie and was struck in the head The coroner's inquest suggests accidental death and the body is under Masonic care The insured man had a $1000 Northwestern Mutual policy and a local lodge directory was found on him He had traveled from Elkhart to Anderson Indiana and his family awaited further news
Andrew Starzynsky and Stephen Starzynsky brothers were shot at a Polish hotel in Pittsburg. Ludwig Szczel, a disassociated Polish priest, opened fire while intoxicated and brooding. Stephen died, Andrew in critical condition. The priest was with a woman he introduced as his housekeeper.
A Strongville posse of citizens, alerted by an automatic alarm, fired on three burglars who attempted to blow the TM Farmers and Merchants Bank safe. The trio fled in a stolen rig and vanished into the woods, one yelling that he had been shot. Authorities believe they cannot escape long.
Residents south of the Lake Shore tracks report the city’s effort to rid tramps has stalled. Hickory and St Joe streets see nightly trespasses as tramps jump from trains seeking unlocked refrigerators and barns in the area.
Temperance workers plan a stronger push in the anti saloon drive with a union meeting set for Sunday night at Trinity M E Church. Leaders say the city fight continues beyond the Third ward victory as ministers and supporters speak. saloonists challenge remonstrance signatures and prepare a test in September before county commissioners.
Last evening the newly incorporated Manning Transmission Company elected officers. Mr Manning was named president with Wider as vice president and Skinner as secretary. Factory arrangements are being made to manufacture transmission clutches on contract machines.
The county signed a five year lease for a fifth floor court suite in the Monger block at West Franklin and Second streets. The rent is 75 dollars monthly with a 12 dollar per month surcharge if a reserve room is used. County Attorney McGatshall led the review and completion of the contract as work on the addition proceeds toward readiness for the September term.
Mrs. R. P. Thorpe wife of Colonel Thorpe of the Lake Shore railroad escaped severe burns after lighting gasoline on a stove in her kitchen at 1011 Cleveland Avenue. She grabbed a rug to smother the flames while sustaining burns to both hands.
