A gang robbed the State Bank of Coal City early this morning in Verona. Three bandits were wounded and captured after a pitched battle with officers and a dentist aiding in the pursuit. Two assailants escaped with about 200 in stamps while a widespread manhunt continued.
County officials led by Commissioner Rood and Mayor Chester inspected the Jackson Street bridge. They found the top eight inches of concrete on the abutments faulty and ordered the contractor to rebuild that section. Steel work was deemed satisfactory though weakened by a freeze. abutments can be strengthened. The bridge has not been accepted by the county.
The Rev Mr Walters spearheads a push to move next year’s Methodist conference to Effshart Bhufftein. The plan limits lodging to hosts and ministers supply their own meals, ending past delays. Churches entertaining the next session may aid superannuated ministers though not required.
The Elkhart society plans May 25 renditions of The Holy City with four soloists, led by Miss Rose Lender, a pupil of Prom Oyo at Winona. Bass solo by Dr Willis, a noted Chicago singer, tenor by Gribb, and other artists from Chicago acclaimed in the press.
President Taft scrapped a May 6 engagement in Indianapolis after Indiana Republicans failed to endorse him, signaling a quick return to Washington from the capital. The cancellation removes a potential politically awkward stop and may influence reaction to his stance ahead of broader events.
Edward Payson Weston the long distance pedestrian reached Elkhart after a morning arrival at nine by the residence district. He claimed to be fourteen days ahead of his schedule and in excellent health despite a prior back strain from a switch handle. He described soaking rains west of Chesterton and an overnight rest in a hayloft before resuming his transcontinental trek toward New York.
From Indiana and neighboring states hundreds of teachers converge on Fort Wayne for the twenty eighth annual convention of the Northern Indiana Teachers' association. The opening addresses feature retiring president J. T. Giles of Marion and successor O. R. Baker of Winchester. Noted speakers include Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick Prof. George S. K. Vincent and Dr. William H. Allen.
Andrews Asphalt Co and Hoosier Construction Co claim majority petitions for resurfacing West Lexington avenue and Second streets. They will present petitions to the board of public works tomorrow as bids are reviewed for the contract. The board must consider the majority petition in awarding the job.
States Attorney Pallishard cross examined John S. Grunuen and Dr. R. W. Miller for nearly three hours about the struggle and Sailor's death. Golda Sailor then testified about the family ties to Dr. Miller and denied her father objected to their relationship.
Halley’s comet rises at 4 31 a m today and 4 27 a m tomorrow with sunrise at 5 29 a m. The comet will precede the sun by about one hour and should be visible to the naked eye low in the east after daybreak. Speed today is 1 6/9 miles per minute. Gilbert Ousterhout twenty year old despondent following a quarrel with a Beardsley avenue woman. He first attempted suicide by shooting a six caliber pistol, then drank carbolic acid and wood alcohol at his Prospect street home. He collapsed at home and was taken to a doctor, who says he has only a fighting chance for life with prognosis uncertain for forty eight hours. He had recently joined Indiana National Guard Company H and moved here nine months ago.
An unknown man described as a tramp killed himself by lying on track No 2 as freight cars moved in the Lake Shore yards. He was instantly ground to pieces and pronounced dead by a city physician. Authorities and a black ambulance responded to the scene.
The American Coating Mills, a new company buying and remodeling the Pratt buggy plant on East Marion Street, filed articles for a $100,000 incorporation in Indianapolis. Directors are Moie Cook, Joseph C. Teague, and Fred B. Walter. The firm plans to coat paper and manufacture paper products. A. R. Kessler was in Cassopolis today on business.
W J Gronert and Mrs E A SALpenta named to library board as meeting last night adjourned. A 450 signature petition urged a city sealer and weigher office. petition referred to ordinance committee. Several ordinances advanced through readings. funds allocated for assessment, collection and finance totals.
The shoe park shore car and locomotive shop project starts with the first grout broken by a surveyor stake. Elkhart aims to be a principal railroad city as surveyors prepare monuments and ground plans for the new shop complex. Crissey of Chicago leads surveying, with crews establishing lines and foundations for early buildings and the power plant. Plans near completion per Cleveland chief engineer, time prints still awaiting final approval. The work proceeds with no interruption as preparations continue.
The Elks installed officers at the Temple last night with Exalted Ruler J A Johnson Leading Knight William Doty and Royal Knight Glen Kepler among new appointees. About two hundred members attended along with visiting Eli from Goshen lodge and a banquet followed.
Local Republicans express disappointment with Beveridge’s one man platform and doubt its appeal at the state convention. Indiana party factions debate county option issues to be addressed at the Goshen GOP meeting slated for June 1 as leaders seek a viable platform.
