Local dispute escalates as Harman files actions against the Ke estate triggering public indignation. City officials urge due process while residents await court decisions and potential settlements amid heightened community tension.
An Elkhart Congregational church trustees meeting debated a $3,705.11 claim by executor E B Zigler and law partner J L Harman for services to the Kellogg estate, with Indiana court practice cited limiting executor attorney fees. Judge James S Dodge viewed the account. will directs Rice and Puterbaugh rent proceeds to New York missions and temperance groups, while Michigan property is to fund manual training schools.
Receiver Wilson Roose of the Indiana National Bank urges Strafford Maxon trustee in bankruptcy of the National Manufacturing Co. to pay part of the bank’s disputed claims. The bank faces a $115000 nationwide debt and expects a dividend only after substantial payments by receivers of debtor factories.
Louis P Stackman of Flint Michigan aged 33 and Helen Watson also of Flint aged 32 appear in a local record. Newton Longley of St Joseph county aged 50 and Hester F Parker of Ehrhart aged 33 are also listed in the same entry.
At the regular school board meeting in the high school Supt. Thomas was rehired for another year. This marks his twentieth year of continuous service as superintendent of the city schools. Aside from the renewal, no major business was reported.
Mrs Isabella Neff aged 81 widow of Moses Neff died Monday at her grandson Frank Neff's home on Morton avenue. Survived by two sons A J and M J of Goshen, adopted son Ed Kelly of Elkhart, daughter Mrs J W Boyles of Johnstown Pa, thirteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She belonged to the Dunkard church most of her life. Funeral by Rev John Felthouse Wednesday at 11 at Forest Grove ten miles east of Goshen. Burial in Eldridge Cemetery.
The will dated April 8, 1899 was filed for probate yesterday. Witnesses J S Rice and A O Rowe certified the instrument, which names Nancy H Dodge as sole legatee and mentions Ralph E Dodge with an alleged debt of 1300 dollars.
Miss Lelia Stakebake a Goshen schools teacher wed James Robbrough in Elkhart last Thursday evening. After a Benton Harbor trip they will reside in Indianapolis. Groom formerly a Lake Shore Michigan division brakeman, from Huntington. Marriage surprised the bride’s friends and the Goshen school board received her resignation on Saturday.
A sequence of property transfers records deeds in Olive Union and Elkhart townships plus Nobannon and Locke with prices from 1 to 10 thousand dollars. Notable transfers include Walter to Holdred for 4 acres in Olive at 600, Ressler to Christian Ressler for 900, and Smoker to David Smoker for 40 acres at 4000, along with multiple Elkhart lot trades and adjoining parcels.
Mrs. Charlotte Elizabeth Bollinger died at Benton yesterday at age 69 years one month and 29 days. She is survived by her husband John Bollinger three daughters and three sons including Mrs Edwin Olsen Mrs Charles Stiver Robert F E Henry J Chatten Milford Ind Mrs Jay Kerstetter Denver Colorado and Rolland Chatten Oregon.
H E Bucklen president of the Valley line tests a new electric motor car at LaGrange driven by a gasoline engine. The car eliminates trolley poles and power stations, using stored electricity to climb grades. If tests prove successful Elkhart will buy several for the Elkhart LaGrange line.
The Niles city council approves a franchise to the Mc Michael interests for an electric line running south on Edwardsburg avenue, passing under the Michigan Central bridge and along the Big Four tracks toward Elkhart. The plan aims to connect with proposed lines to Indianapolis, with Henry C. Mason as manager aiding the project alongside Kalamazoo road plans.
Remains of Henry Clay Dodge were laid to rest in Grace Lawn cemetery yesterday afternoon. Rev. Simpson delivered an impressive sermon at the house. About 35 Kane Lodge of Masons members and 50 Bar Association members attended the services, along with old army friends. Herbert Graham, Worshipful Master of the Masons, led burial rites. The Masonic Quartet performed.

Rev. Anderson D. Parrett longtime Methodist minister and elder statesman of Whitley County died of tuberculosis at 4 p.m. He born August 13, 1816 in Fayette county Ohio came to Indiana in 1836 and preached into his 70s. Survived by four sons Joseph Samuel John and R J Parrett and daughter Nancy Graham. Funeral plans call for evening services at his home and a Thursday service in South Whitley’s Methodist church.
Mrs Lucy Stephens of Mason Township Cass County Michigan died yesterday of paralysis after a six year struggle. About 74, she came from Ohio 55 years ago with her mother and stepfather. Widow of Civil War veteran Samuel Stephens, she leaves son Herbert and two daughters Cora Proctor and another daughter in Calvin area. Funeral Friday at 10 AM at South Church.
Thief familiar with the Elkhart City Electric Company building at 120 West Jackson stole between 55 and 60 dollars from pay envelopes late Saturday night or Sunday morning. Foreman R O Goudy found the double doors to the stock room pried open at 8 am. Police say outside screws torn from bolts indicate forced entry.
Samuel Hepler aged 64 died at his home five miles southwest of Nappane from a complication of diseases. The burial was Sunday at South Union.
The Lake Shore announces spring and summer upgrades at Elkhart including a new passenger coach yard on the old round houses site, demolition of the oldest engine house, expansion of the depot platform westward, and lengthening of classification yards to reduce congestion. The effort follows a $1,000,000 investment in recent years to ease rail operations and prevent main street blockages.
The will to be probated Monday leaves the entire estate valued at about $100,000 to Nannie H. Dodge the widow. Children are expected to contest the will with daughter Mrs. T. S. Baldwin of Doners Grove Chicago leading the dissatisfaction. Son Charles Dodge did not attend the funeral but may join the challenge. Peter Merola an Italian laborer was arrested by Sergi Whiteman and Officer Stamp for stealing a bicycle from M L Ryan of 1108 Harrison. He pleaded guilty before Judge Raymer and received 30 days in jail plus a $10 fine and costs totaling $20. Merola was taken to Goshen last evening by Sheriff Manning after painting the handlebars and frame to disguise ownership. A youth named Harrison identified the wheel from a brass chain link.
Sheriff Manning smashed two of three confiscated slot machines in a raid on a South Main street gambling house above John H Krumpetz's saloon. The third device remains for destruction on a future trip. authorities hurried to catch a Lake Shore train.
May Catherine Jones sues for divorce from Charles Sumner Jones alleging neglect and mistreatment. They wed April 10 1900 and separated April 15 1904.
