A compact wartime poem by Charles Fenno UGFFMAN recounts a small band of soldiers charging through burning streets at Monterey. The verses honor fallen comrades and praise the bravery shown amid fire and wreckage as banners wave and bugles sound.
A narrator recounts being buried alive after a timber crushes him and a bungled funeral plan leads to a dramatic escape. Jerusha and Bob mock his presumed death while debating his love and wealth, then scramble as the coffin plot collapses. He reveals the snuff colored suit revenge and later joins his wife in a domestic twist.
A detailed gift box crafted for the wife dated November 3 1874 by H E Stone of Elkhart Indiana. It features cherry body from a table leaf once owned by Geo Thurber and quarter round curly maple corners from a Chenango County rolling pin. Lion paw feet in black ash with birds eyes and ornate inlays in rosewood ebony white maple and other woods.
The national and Indiana State Woman's Christian Temperance Unions appeal for contributions to cover heavy printing, correspondence, and office expenses. They warn of no treasury funds and urge donations from individuals and auxiliaries to fund operations and meet annual per member fees. They call for reg mail or post office orders to Treasurer Mary B. Snee wamm in Cleveland Ohio and urge broad support to overthrow the liquor traffic. The message ends noting only ten Indiana counties have donated to meet state expenses and mentions the upcoming state convention.
The Indiana Woman's Christian Temperance Union urges rapid June work. Money sent to treasurer Auretta Hoyt, 461 North East St., Indianapolis, will be forwarded to the National Union after a one half retention. Officers Z G Walllace president and M M Finen secretary oversee the appeal.
The piece contrasts Mississippi Governor Ames’s veto of a repeal bill with Indiana Governor Hendricks’s pro temperance stance. It cites Ames’s veto message praising reform and urging law perfection, noting debates and political fallout among lawmakers. It also includes a long, related 1875 dispatch and a letter from Aner U. Dana reflecting on life abroad and tropical observations.
The testimony recounts various claims by Mr Beecher regarding his conduct with Mrs Tilton up to December 1870. He denies improper proposals or favors and asserts he had no carnally intimate relations with her, drawing applause that was suppressed by officers under court direction.
On Saturday April 16 1875 at 2 p.m. at A E Faber’s Eagle faces Newell in a contested dog case jury trial. Spectators may attend if they keep order and decorum. The Democratic Union mocks the editor for not naming the event as a dog fight, declaring the programme clear to all.
Notice announces a district vacancy for Naval Academy admissions to be filled May 13 1875 in Goshen Indiana. Candidates must reside in the district be 14 to 18 years old at least five feet tall and of good moral character with sound health. Exams cover reading writing spelling arithmetic geography and English grammar. Further information available upon inquiry.
