October saw 32 deaths and 32 births with 4 smallpox cases detected in a neighborhood ring around Mrs. Mahn of 485 Jefferson. City deaths totaled 31, with ages from under one to over seventy five, and a 183 5 rate. Four quarantines, vaccination of unvaccinated neighbors, and school fumigation follow an apparent mild spread mistaken for chickenpox.
Culver city football left halfback E Brown suffered a severe head injury after being kicked by Elkhart quarterback Harry Davis at Elkhart Driving Park. Brown was carried from the field unconscious and taken to a doctor, remaining semi conscious on the 5 o clock interurban to South Bend. The game ended scoreless as Elkhart and Culver left the field.
A. H. Beardsley’s car slid on wet pavement at Main and Franklin this morning and struck a telephone lineman’s wagon, turning it over. The horse fell and scrambled onto the sidewalk as the wagon’s bills were broken in the impact.
About 100 foreigners have been naturalized by County Clerk Fleming since October 20. In South Bend the Democratic clerk refused to naturalize voters brought in by Republicans, claiming he was out of blanks. All Democrats were accommodated. Today 200 foreigners were taken to Hammond by the Republicans to be naturalized.
Walter Hills and Eva Haywood of White Pigeon obtained a marriage license and were married by City Judge Hughes. They planned to go to Illinois. In a separate item, the Mann Lumber Co received an order for materials for three houses from an Elkhart professional, contingent on tomorrow's election outcome. if Taft loses, the order may be canceled.
In Superior Court Charles BE Neldig filed against Jacob C. and Frank B. Culp a suit on a $50 note asking judgment for $75. The complaint notes Davis and Schaefer fled.
Superintendent Silvers reports the city had the calmest Halloween on record with minimal disturbances. A few incidents included fence damage on Marion street, a spring wagon accident near the Franklin street fill, two intoxicated men jailed, hoodlum stones thrown at a Northeast Elkhart officer, and scattered property concerns. A Detweiler family recovered their missing cow from a tented Prairie street sale area after a long search.
A large pile of brush in the hollow between Hydraulic and East Jackson streets was set ablaze as a Halloween prank. Several nearby piles caught fire, drawing many downtown residents. Central Fire Company arrived and extinguished the blaze due to danger to nearby buildings.
The trunk and belongings of John R. Parker and a woman living with him were sold in Justice Brum baugh's court on Saturday. The sale netted $58.60, about $15 above the appraisement, to satisfy a Goldman Bros. judgment. A spectator attempted to steal two silk kimonos valued at $25, sparking a confrontation with Constable Dwight, who slapped the man. the items were later recovered.
An eight year old boy lost his balance Sunday noon while looking over the edge of the Indiana avenue sewer near Tenth street and fell to the bottom. He was only slightly bruised and carried home. The sewer is sixteen feet deep with steel sheeting and iron jacks. The boy's head was cut but no bones were broken.
Warren G. Hill, returning from New York, witnessed the big Taft parade and reports strong, bipartisan support for Taft. He notes business leaders feel Taft will win New York by 100000 to 150000, though some precincts favor Chanter, and fears of Hughes losing the Empire State persist.
Mrs. Gary Ross stood out as the lone woman equestrian in the Republican parade last Friday. A liveryman challenged her with a horse if she would ride it, and she accepted, proving her enthusiasm for Republicanism, her brother reports.

A Saturday blaze in White Pigeon destroyed the town hall fire engine house and village jail at 1 30 pm. Joseph Pierson tending gasoline street lamps sparked an explosion igniting chemicals and triggering a large fire injuring Fearson Reed and others. Firefighters saved the chemical engine. two firemen were burned. The disaster follows prior fires and a 1907 acetylene gas plant explosion in the village.
Former assistant superintendent T. J. Dawson becomes general yard master at the hump, with Sam Bates choosing to become day yard master. H. H. Andrews moves to night duty, C. A. Scott runs the east bound hump at night, and Albert Garman relinquishes extra duties as he shifts roles. Dawson began active duties Sunday.
Ziesel Bros. claim of 3000 against the receiver for A F Underwood Co arising from alleged breach of a ten year Main and Harrison streets lease will be liquidated. Referee Lambert ruled after nearly four hours to allow filing a petition to designate liquidation method in courts. plaintiffs argue the $3000 bond became due on forfeiture. defendant says bond not forfeited or only damages proved. In Fort Wayne Indiana on Sunday afternoon Dick Nahrwald a saloon keeper was shot and killed by John Kelly. Officials say the shooting occurred during a heated wet and dry campaign after a large demonstration for Democratic candidate Marshal. The incident is alleged to be accidental pending investigation.
John W. Kern closes his campaign in Northwestern Ohio with a stop in Toledo and a speech planned for tonight in the city. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Judson Harmon accompanies Kern on the tour of the Fifth district.
A rail accident near Charlotte on the West Carolina line leaves many reported killed and injured. Details remain scarce as crews assess the wreck and救 victims are transported to area hospitals.

Taft toured from Buffalo toward Cleveland and spoke to about 5000 people, largely Brooks plant workers of the American Locomotive Co. He claimed he has been slandered by his opponent over his stance toward labor, said his win would secure prosperity, and promised continued protective tariffs. Mrs. Taft joined him with chrysanthemums.
Reports to the Republican National Committee show New York railroad workers broadly backing William H. Taft for president. A straw vote on the Boston and Maine line from the state line to Mechanicsville recorded Taft with 62 votes, Debs eight, and Bryan two.
Washington November 2. Secretary of War Wright will hold down the lid for the administration tomorrow. It will be the first time a Democrat presides over government during a Republican administration. The president and White House aides will vote at Oyster Bay and return for early returns tonight.
Republicans report about a million dollars spent in the current campaign while Democrats claim roughly half a million. Treasurer Upham says western headquarters have gathered about 350,000. Headquarters are being dismantled and deserted.
Bryan, confident of a landslide victory, heads north through Kansas on the final campaign swing. He continues to attack Taft as the candidate of Rockefeller and the steel trust, with expected jubilant welcomes awaiting him in Lincoln this evening.
A livery barn housing Ernest Hanes burned in Wabash Indiana on Sunday causing about 8000 dollars in damage. Six horses perished in the blaze. Hanes suspects a match left in a hay rack used by a Halloween crowd sparked the fire.
Suspected suicide surrounds the deaths of Mack DeVore, his wife, and their thirteen year old son found in their Columbus home. The trio were asphyxiated and authorities consider the family possibly responsible for their own deaths.
The Hague reports the Dutch government has ordered the blockade of Venezuelan ports effective immediately. No further details were provided on the scope or duration of the measure.
At Republican and Democratic headquarters in New York the final campaign work ends as Mack and Hitchcock plan returns to receive results.
