Flag Day Prophecy and Republican Tensions Highlight 1908 Elkhart Dispatch

In Elkhart Indiana this June 15 1908 the Daily Review notes flag day observance shifted to Monday and critiques the Republican platform. It questions Taft Fairbanks dynamics and warns of explosive convention outcomes while stressing patriotism and party forecasts for the next four years.

Platform, not the man, guides Republican unity

Many Republicans prefer another candidate to Taft, but after the convention they will accept the nominee if he aligns with the party platform. If the platform is bent to fit a single man, unrest will follow. The party's stance lies in its principles, not in any one candidate. The platform will reveal the party's attitude on policies and may determine loyalty or fragmentation.

Loans on Insurance Policies in 1907 Boom

The piece notes a 1907 surge in life insurance policy loans amid money stringency. Banks hoarded cash while insurers loaned at low rates, with some big companies lending up to $1,000,000 daily. Savings banks required 60 days’ notice to curb withdrawals, yet no insurer withheld loans or defaulted on loan obligations.
