Washington Jan 7. Senators and representatives from the Pacific coast have perfected a measure to exclude Chinese residents. The bill will be introduced in both houses within days and is designed to be perpetual until repealed, far broader than prior proposals.
Washington reports Governor Shaw of Iowa, newly named secretary of the treasury, toured the executive departments and met with the secretaries before returning home at 6 p m. Also noted are plans for a new assistant postmaster general and a bill to revive the army canteen.
Reports from Berlin state Rudolf Virchow sustained a fracture of the thigh after a slip yesterday. The noted professor is described as doing well and in satisfactory condition.
London reports Jean Richepin, French poet, says in June 1899 David Belasco hired him to write a play on Mme DuBarry, paid £1000, and used the ideas in a New York production. Belasco denies copying, says he rejected the manuscript and produced his own work. Richepin seeks author rights and may sue. talks with Beerbohm Tree for London production.
John G. Sadlier, 50, superintendent of Springfield Foundry and Indianapolis Frog and Switch, was shot and killed by a recently discharged molder, John W. Kenney. Kenney, who had threatened Sadlier and coworker John Cox, waited in the hall and fired five shots. Sadlier, a prominent labor figure with fourteen children, died at once. Kenney is in custody.
West Union Iowa January 7 Homer M Neff county surveyor and former clerk shot and killed Miss Rose Falls who had long been his escort wounded rival Emmet Sullivan then killed himself in the Commercial hotel room between 5 and 9 pm Sunday. Sullivan expected to recover. Neff age about 45 and had lived there most of his life. He bore an excellent reputation though eccentric.
Henry Selig of Madison Indiana fired two shots after discovering a man on his Northeast city line premises at 1 a m The second shot struck the intruder in the left side The wounded man ran 200 yards before collapsing He died at 8 30 a m The deceased proved to be Frederick Scudder a discharged employee of Selig Also see 26
Hon Isador Rayner counsel for Admiral Schley observed the House floor yesterday and discussed the naval affairs bills with Representative Cummings of New York, learning the overall status of the Schley case proposals.
Four men broke into the A. R. Scott Bank at Bethany Illinois late Friday night. They blew open the safe and fled with about $2,000 in bills. A large stash of gold and silver remained. citizens fired on the robbers after being aroused by the explosion and gunfire. The thieves worked two hours and fired five nitro charges before escape.
Justice Brown of the United States court delivers the opinion in the Leo Alexandros deserter case. Alexandros, a Russian subject held in Philadelphia, is ordered restored to the Russian government from the Wa Ting incident.
Iron Mountain Michigan January 7 The Chapin mine in Iron Mountain has been transferred to the Oliver Mining Company. The Quinnesee mine previously owned by Illinois Steel has also been transferred to Oliver Mining Company. War office denies Boer surrender outrage report from Pretoria January 1.
Monroe Michigan January 7. Contractor W B Strang says he has not been paid per agreement and has stopped construction on the Detroit and Toledo electric line. No cars will run Detroit to Toledo as track is blocked by loaded cars.
Norfolk Virginia January 7. Three children were burned to death in Springfield suburbs after their mother locked them in a room with a fire burning. Fire officials reported the tragedy occurred yesterday as smoke and flames enveloped the residence.

Muncie Indiana January 7 The Chicago and Southeastern railroad Midland remains largely halted as trainmen strike over unpaid wages. Management says partial operation continues while strikers demand back pay. Coal orders for Brazil cannot be filled until resolution. The road has operated co operatively since the two month old strike and a large coal freight business has continued.

Interstate Commerce Commission officials in Chicago began a probe into shipping methods for packing-house products and pressed beef, and into railroad combinations. The inquiry will cover packing-house handling for days before addressing the results of community of interests. Only two of six packing-house reps were served subpoenas. others are in hiding. The commission does not plan to pursue masterminds of rail road combinations immediately.
Willemstad Curaçao January 7. General Riera and other insurgents who gathered here embarked on the Libertador Sunday night and landed in Venezuela yesterday near Valdecoro with arms and ammunition. It is reported the Libertador captured the Venezuelan gun boat Zumbador, formerly the tug Agosto.
A New York report states the first contract marriage under the Weeks law was filed with the city clerk. The agreement between a man and a woman to live together as husband and wife becomes legal when signed, witnessed by a commissioner of deeds, and filed within a month, legally validating the union and its offspring.

Liberty Neb Jan 7 Smith Diller cashier of the First National Bank of Diller Neb who gave the town its name cut his throat Sunday with suicidal intent. Though badly injured he is expected to recover. His child died from accidental poisoning a few months ago and since then he has been mentally deranged.
Eldora Iowa January 7 J L Robinson and his wife of Sibley Osceola county celebrate their seventy second wedding anniversary. Robinson is 93 and his wife 91, a record length of marriage likely the longest in Iowa and possibly the west.
Everett Mass Jan 7 Robert H Jenkins collapsed and died while delivering his speech accepting the office of president of the board of aldermen at the city government inauguration.
Harry Goldberg a Broadway jeweler was robbed at noon Saturday as two men raided his shop taking watches and diamonds valued at about 1000 dollars. The burglary occurred while he was away for lunch.
