Washington February 14 Champ Clark led a lively house speech on tariff and the president drawing laughs with witty, vivid lines. He praised Theodore Roosevelt yet warned against party excesses while noting Roosevelt’s virtues and faults without hysterical admiration.
Clark denounces the president as wielding a heavy hand driving Republicans toward Abdullam like a cave of wailing and gnashing. Detroit Feb 14 Secretary Taft spoke to the Michigan Retail Lumber Dealers association at a luncheon citing the need for tougher railway regulation and a broadened interstate commerce commission authority. He warned against state socialism and urged enforcing anti trust laws with new specifics. Taft noted broad Michigan support and planned to attend West Point graduation after remarks.
Milwaukee reports the Wisconsin delegation to the Democratic national convention at Denver will be pledged to William Jennings Bryan. The state convention opened at the Davidson theater with John F. Doherty of LaCrosse as temporary chairman delivering a pro Bryan, pro-Democratic speech. The platform and delegates at large were to be decided.
