Yerkes Dies at Waldorf Astoria After Long Illness
Charles T. Yerkes, famed railway financier of Chicago and London, dies in his Waldorf Astoria hotel apartment after more than six weeks of illness from a cold and complications. His wife Mrs. Chas. T. Yerkes had briefly refused to visit but relented and was present at his death.

In 1875 Yerkes entered street railway building and by May 1 1876 ran cars for the Centennial. He later controlled Chicago horse lines, added cable traction, built lines into fringe areas, and profited from land as population grew. He supervised the West Side lines the Lake Street L the Northwestern L and the Loop while facing press and power struggles. His nerve allegedly helped close the Chicago Stock Exchange for months and he warned bankers of a crash to force closure of the exchange. London railway ventures have been news via cable reports.
