A visitor found Sidway Mercantile Co employing 385 workers with only three under sixteen. The firm plans currency pay on the next payday before Christmas and signals a return to normal conditions, following Lake Shore shop’s nine hour schedule. Further payroll gains and employment rises are expected soon.
Between two and four pm Monday John Hower of 104 Melcher avenue was away when the house was entered and a trunk looted of 28 dollars. The door key was left in the mailbox and later found in the unlocked door. Neighbors saw nothing and police remain mystified. Housewives fear milk deliveries may suffer as burglars continue.
The New Freight Depot project starts at the northwest corner of Second and Marion streets after the Chicago South Bend and Northern Indiana Railway Co appointed Cummins as Superintendent of Construction. Workers clear snow and unload materials while a timber car blocks the side track due to a maple tree. the issue is resolved and the tree is to be cut down.
John Clem of this city visiting in North Manchester reads in the Review of George Lee and Mrs. Catherine Vanfelt of Jeffersonville as the oldest living twins in the United States. Clem writes to the Review to assert a stronger claim. He and his twin Abraham Clem of Vermontville Michigan were born February 24 1827 making them more than two years older than the southern Indiana claimants. His handwriting is notably steady for his advanced age.
The Elkhart County Bar Association executive committee met in Goshen to arrange the annual banquet at Hotel Hascall on Saturday December 28. O M Conley will toastmaster with speakers I H Church J L Hayman and BH A Baker of Elkhart BE A Dausman W J Davis and J B Gattshall of Goshen. The group also noted 1908 officer elections after the banquet.
About fifty farmers from across Elkhart County met at the court house to organize the Horse Thief Protective Association aimed at guarding rural areas from horse theft and marauders. Officers elected are President Lewis McClure Henry Beck as secretary and Michael Rookstool as treasurer. A December 28 meeting at the court house will allow interested farmers to join. Elkhart Boys Fight Cody Fire details a blaze in Cody Wyoming where former Elkhart residents Harry Wilkinson and Harry Bickel aided firefighting efforts after a dance. two saloons and a dance hall were destroyed. Wilkinson is expected home on leave.
A noted swindler who registered as L. Deutch at Hotel Bucklen on October 8 fleeced landlord G. KE. Sherman of 60 dollars via a worthless check and board bill. Arrested at Heboygan Wisconsin, the culprit issued checks under various names for 60 dollars and targeted hotel men in Ohio Wisconsin Michigan and Illinois as well as this state. The check bound for Sherman bore the Standard Manufacturing Co of Boston at one end.
J. G. Klein, longtime proprietor of the second-hand store at 226 South Main, has sold half his interest to his brother in law George Rehm of Sturgis who assumed part of the managerial duties today. Rehm moved his family to a San Pedro street home and his son Jay, a rural school teacher, will come to town to take a business college course.
The November report shows total government expenses of 13 748.09 dollars with no mayor present due to illness. The Street Department graded North Michigan street and flushed multiple sewers. Fire Department answered five calls with limited loss. expenditures covered salaries, parks, engineering, lighting, water and more. Health, controller, and treasurer reports were published, no other business.

Georgetown Kentucky reports the rifle used to kill Goebel was introduced in evidence for the first time. The weapon's history and its whereabouts since the murder may connect to the case. The bombshell comes as the trial proceeds in early December in the Goebel assassination proceedings.
The seven masted schooner Thomas W Lawson, which foundered off the Scilly Islands last Saturday, has broken in two and probably no part can be saved. It was the only seven masted schooner on the waters.

District meetings set for January 14. precinct meetings January 10 or 11. county committees to organize January 13. state committee members to meet January 16 at the Claypool Hotel Indianapolis.
