President Leads Fleet Departure to San Francisco

The Pacific bound Atlantic fleet left Hampton Roads heading south through the Straits of Magellan toward the west coast. President and Rear Admiral Evans reviewed the fleet from the Mayflower as ships cleared the Virginia capes and proceeded in single column toward Chesapeake Bay.

Navy fleet sails for long cruise amid crowded hotels

The fleet of sixteen battleships with about 15,000 men departed amid crowds of wives and officials. Admiral Evans urged duty to country and flag as chaplains held services, promising Navy fidelity. The voyage, lasting about 135 days, aims for San Francisco around May 1.

Burglary at South Bend Councilman Home

The residence of Councilman Gus Stueckle in South Bend was burglarized last Saturday evening. Jewelry and watches valued at about $400 were taken. The Daily Review reports the incident.
