In Gillespie case hearings, defense moves to set aside jury submission before testimony. Deputy McMillen’s opening remarks disputed as the judge weighs the motion. Nearby witnesses recount gunshot sounds and scenes at the Gillespie home as the coroner's inquest notes death from a head wound.
After an all day Prohibition national executive committee session heated exchanges centered on Stewart of Chicago. A vote of 24 to 20 called for his resignation to preserve party harmony, with opponents led by Dickie of Michigan Stevens of Pennsylvania and Wolfenbarger of Nebraska.
The national committee records its opinion that in the conduct of the national campaign O. W. Stewart has not been guilty of misappropriating funds, but for harmony's sake should resign.
Cleveland police report crowds at the jail where many sought Mrs. Chadwick. President Beckwith and his wife visited, shaking hands with her after a cordial meeting. Beckwith claimed Chadwick ruined him but doubted fraud accusations. Chadwick hesitated to promise a formal statement amid hostile press coverage.
Mrs. Elliott Price of Utah testified at the Smoot hearing about converting to Mormonism in Denmark and moving to America in 1872. She described attending the endowment house, oaths, ceremonies, and robes with heart and square symbols worn as reminders of vows, noting that robes were worn by both sexes as undergarments afterward. She said she left the church when it proved not as she believed.

Mrs Sidney Mew of Goshen mixed washing powder with batter causing a harmless pancake mishap while her husband amusedly relayed the joke. A Goshen fire destroyed a building with $8500 insurance renewed in time. James Earl Cephes, 17, jailed on default of $200 bond, suspected in a bicycle theft.
Sarah Wharyerstock seeks a divorce from Andrew claiming cruel treatment and drunkenness. The couple married in 1886 and separated last month. The Co-Operative Association has filed a $4,500 foreclosure suit against Homer Johnson and others.

Two hundred sixty Eagles attended the banquet after a large class initiation Thursday evening. The class numbered 75 with many from Warsaw and Antone. visiting Eagles included 100 from South Bend and 17 from Warsaw plus two from Antone. The Elkhart team handled ritual work while President Haslander of the South Bend aerie directed the meeting. Court Elkhart No. 5 elected officers including Chief Ranger Seldon Loudenslager and Charles Bickel as financial secretary and delegate to the grand lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Sellers left for Fort Wayne to attend the wedding of Eckadora Sanders invited by Grace L. Shumard of Marion Street who entertained twenty ladies in Toledo-bound guest Mrs. George J. Givens.
The Thursday Club met at Mrs. D W Thomas home with discussion on lies in various forms and ethics. Mrs I M Clark led a prepared paper while Mrs Frazer and Mrs Reynolds delivered papers on Rameses II and The Ramesseum. A January meeting is planned at Mrs Kaufman Funk’s home. Also noted is a Washington dispatch on Beveridge committee and women voting for delegates. A travel education reader promotes The Four Track News at 50 cents yearly. The Senators Battery and Century Club top the percentage column with 667 after four wins and two losses. Victors and Owls sit at 500, while Colonial Club lags with a last place line. Individual scores include ae Johnson and Willett among others with varied totals.
Washington Dec 11 The senate committee on territories votes 6 to 5 to favor a report on the statehood bill admitting Oklahoma and Indian Territory as Oklahoma and Arizona and New Mexico as Arizona The bill originates in the house but has been amended The changes include ten year liquor traffic prohibition in Indiana Territory and removal of most suffrage provisions except that rights must not be denied on account of race color or previous condition of servitude The house bill had allowed states to restrict suffrage by sex but that was dropped after protests by woman suffragists.
Bobby Walthour reports the American Cyclists Association will launch if the National Cycling Association pursues penalties against ten riders who left the six day event in New York. Wealthy backers and many leading professionals are said to back the move. A Boston meeting next month aims to complete the organization with Kerrinson possibly serving as president.
Spread rails wrecked the fast mail on the C B and Q near Bristol NL killing fireman Oscar Johnson of Galesburg NL. Engineer A Cowdry of Galesburg NL and conductor M H Farrell will die of injuries. Also reported Gardner defeats O Keefe in Butte Montana boxing match.
Stockholders of the St. Louis Vandalia and Terre Haute Railroad at Greenville Indiana voted almost unanimously in favor of merging into the Vandalia Railroad company. Dissenting stockholders of the Terre Haute and Indianapolis line did not oppose the meeting.
