Telecommunication workers walk out at Associated Press rooms and across cities including New York Chicago Los Angeles and more, tying up news service as conciliators from labor groups arrive. Both sides refuse arbitration, insisting on meeting operator demands while a large union backs the strike.
A telegraphers strike that began in Los Angeles last Friday spread to New York City today. Three spontaneous walkouts occurred targeting Western Union, the Postal Telegraph, and the Associated Press. Strikers cited poor treatment of discharged employees as a trigger and said action followed after the main Western Union office walkout.
Chicago reports Associated Press operators across the southern and western circuits halted work in Ta vom and other hubs, with loyalty in New York and several eastern offices keeping partial service. General Manager Stone coordinated measures to maintain news delivery as unions discuss future steps. In Montreal, 25 to 80 operators joined in sympathy with U S strikers.
