Crowds in cities from Chicago to New York join solemn ceremonies as Gen. Grant is laid to rest. The funeral procession departs New York and cities nationwide observe legal holidays with parades by major military and civil groups and official notices via Western Union.
A man left his home Tuesday and did not return until Thursday morning. He immediately went to the barn took a scythe and, in a discouraged mood, hanged himself from a rafter. The incident is being treated as a suicide by self harm within the household.
In Lafayette Alabama on August 8 a family dispute over a business matter led to deadly violence. William Hancock killed his father by firing with a gun after a confrontation with his elder son. The younger son wounded the second son, then fled. authorities report no remorse from the murderer and note the family is respected locally. Separately in Carcano August 8 a widow Mrs M Walsh was found murdered in her Fulton Street home with a cord around her throat and a cut open mattress, robbery suspected though no suspects are known.
In Lovuis Ee on Aug 8 a German dairyman Kaelin allegedly cut his wife’s throat with a pocket knife at 11 80 o clock then wounded himself. Neighbors heard screams from the children. the wife died before rescuers arrived, Kaelin survived but cannot recover.
