In a Ninth Ward gathering officials and candidates discussed rapid mailout plans to boost campaign exposure before voting. Republican leaders debated mayoral hopefuls Mraviag and an unnamed rival, urging volunteers to distribute pamphlets and mobilize a turnout, with emphasis on timely circulation before primaries.
Thomas Wills, claiming Asbury Park as home, was arrested at Aldene by Policeman Ifwis and Osiver Ratchford late last night. A companion was present. Wills was searched after officers watched two suspicious men. Police learned he stole a coat from a local grocer, B. & Grocer in New Castle Dal.
Soot fell on a floor in an abandoned fireplace in a store kitchen at 549 East Jersey Street. Mrs M Dowd cried out as flames appeared in cracks near a stove pipe. Mrs J McGrath and Mrs Robert Stein alerted others and fire crews from company No 4 and No 3 responded, with women aiding until the blaze was brought under control.
A store fire at Harry O Levy's shop yesterday caused Mrs Levy to faint from smoke and fear. A nearby pharmacist aided sufferers and Mrs Petagerald and Miss Ruth Church helped carry valuables from the home above the store before escaping. Levy said the incident may not reunite with the business until after repairs.
Fire protection in the El Mora district was discussed after a protest urging safer school construction. One story buildings were proposed to reduce fire hazards and a list of streets and areas under consideration was noted, including Westfield Avenue Princeton Road and Lafayette Street among others. The meeting, led by President Collins, addressed board annexation actions and proposed safety measures.
Fire protection officials plan to install a tall alarm system along Broad Street after demonstrations by Petty Fire Alarm Company. The device signals drivers to yield when fire engines approach railroad arches, with a 290 foot distance noted for safe passage and a waterproof housing containing a motor driving three foot arms to rotate signals.
Wilbur Wright achieved a 39 minute 19 second flight covering 29 miles at 46 mph the fastest air speed, beating European records. The event followed motor problems and a late fix. Orville Wright, sailing a duplicate machine, did not attempt a flight due to high winds.
At a meeting of the executive committee of the Bixt h in Bus in its headquarters the Lycenga Building last night a motion was passed inviting Congressman Challen XK Fowler to address the public meeting tonight at the same place. Fowler gladly accepted the invitation. Also planned is a gathering of candidates for state and county offices, with many city and ward representatives expected. A file noted Adrian F Boutt to run for member of the Board of Education replacing Henry L Saltonstall who died Monday. The filing occurred this morning by WIlliam P Grover.
An old ad promotes Union Business College with emphasis on modern instruction, up-to-date equipment, and practical courses such as bookkeeping. Principal Mueced or similar name featured. includes brief identifiers and course focus.
Barry Jacobson of 40 Elizabeth Avenue had received a check from Royal Exchange Assurance via F W Phares for a fire claim in Ma Home recently. While MF and Mix a visited New Eng States, a brother-in-law alone in the house awoke to smoke and found a closet in flames. He threw water to control the blaze but the fire caused considerable damage before being extinguished.
A brief session of the upper court heard arraignments and pleas today. Samuel Hargester, 16, pleaded guilty to larceny of 14 dollars and was placed under probation for one year with suspended sentence due to youth and poor health. Patrick Foley pleaded to larceny involving a revolver and $3.00. he faces sentencing next week. Chayler Hainy and Fred Schuster, 16, pleaded guilty to breaking and entering. A man charged with following women in Westfield appeared with a bondsman and was released on 200 bail.
City Finance Committee reported on a Park Purposes ordinance to buy meadow land along the Elizabeth River. The measure drew much comment and remained on the table after extensive debate led by John Sauer, committee chair.
Shortly after 11 this morning two trellay cars carried about sixty rate parade units toward Jersey City for the annual State convention of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association. A fife and drum corps led the first car with the committee and delegates. the second car held Patrolmen Chief George C. Tenney Mayor P F Ryan Judge Owen Mahon Captain John A. Peters General D F Colfinng and city officials. A noon banquet at Schutzon Park followed the parade. Delegates to the Columbus convention included John J Chenbergey. Officers elected: President William McCracken Vice President James Defe Cormack Secretary John J Ohrenberger Treasurer Alfred Bishop Trustees George Kirk Mulhearn P Sheridan. A supper was served after the program prepared by Charles Leonard.
Mary Pitman testified that Seyck deceived her under promise of marriage, taking 650 dollars, two gold watches valued at 45 dollars, and a gold chain valued at 50 dollars. Louis Leyek was jailed by daytime officers until he would consent to marry. Tayck was arrested by Officer Jen and taken to Police Headquarters. The case outlines a complex scheme involving ransomings and premarital coercion.
New York Lieutenant Governor Lewis Stuyvesant Chanler was unanimously nominated for governor by the Democratic State Convention. John A. Dix was named lieutenant governor, with John Whalen for secretary of state, Julius Hauser for state treasurer, and George M. Palmer for attorney general. The selection followed overnight meetings and strong upstate support for Chanler despite some opposition from party leaders.
The Seventh Ward Republican Club met at Kiefers Hall to endorse four candidates for county and city offices including William H Charles J Jensen and Thomas F Haviland for freeholder and assessor hopeful Henry Young for city and county committee. Speakers included Kirstein defending his term and urging focus on important upcoming bills while others like Jensen Whit Garton and Zanke promoted their campaigns for local offices.
A circulating petition in the Eleventh Ward protested the reappointment of Charlock as postmaster. Prominent residents deny knowledge of the action and doubt the report’s origin, noting Charlock’s term ends in February. Charlock declined to discuss the matter, saying he will ignore it and it gives him no worry.
William Be son, longtime Overseer of the Poor, marks his 65th birthday today. City officials and residents gathered at City Hall to extend congratulations, with a parade of local supporters presenting best wishes and honor.
