Fifty crippled children received free treatment at the new St Elizabeth Hospital clinic for deformed children opened today under Dr. Carl R. Keppler. The morning session showed a range of malformations, braces, and surgeries as mothers waited with hopeful, worn faces in a crowded room.
The Knights of Pythias Memorial Day plans were set for June 1. A committee including Louie Volmer Joseph Poole Archibald Wright was named to invite Rev T H Contax to preach. The general committee includes members from Olive Branch Harmony and Volunteer Lodges and local officers.
Oliver Spitzer testified in federal court that sugar frauds traced to Henry Havemeyer, organizer of the Sugar Trust. Spitzer said he confessed to sugar schemes to clear his conscience and regain public esteem, denying promises of pardon. He recalled counsel pressing self preservation and described meetings with Captain Flynn and Mr Stimson. Washington B. Thomas, Sugar Trust president, remained in court under subpoena despite requests to leave.
Fire destroyed the Champlain Hotel on the lake near Plattsburg New York as renovation continued for the summer season. Sixty employees escaped with the lone electrician Herbert believed missing in the flames. The hotel was valued at 1.5 million dollars.
Port Huron May 25 Wrecking parties will be sent about thirty two miles off Point Barques to inspect the steel steamer Frank H Goodyear which lies shattered in forty fathoms of water with eighteen crew lost. The vessel is believed to be a total loss.
The John Stephenan Company shows enough orders to sustain six months of work with 550 men employed. Superintendent Logis Kiing says the plant can hire more mechanics and notes a large offer for a new type for Washington amid smaller orders and steady inflow.
Charles West elected president to succeed Major Charles W. tewin at the 8 P C A annual meeting in the Presbyterian chapel. Officers reelected include Dr Frederick A Zucker as first vice president and secretary Miss Mary Barber. The board of directors names list Mrs E B Price and others. Zucker reelected superintendent, reports show 163 cases investigated and 19 arrests. several outcomes noted with fines and one jail sentence. Secretary Mary Barber’s report highlights city fountain projects, court decisions, and aid from Frederick Faulks as the society expands water stations and hydrant use during heat.
Willem T. Seyler faces a jury verdict this afternoon over the murder of Fue Adema after a morning session in which Prosecutor Goldenberg summed the case. The attorney argued the slain girl’s disarranged clothing and surfaced body tied Seyler to a fatal assault and murder.
The Brotherhood of Machinists plans a public mass meeting for union and non union workers tomorrow night at Saenger Hall Elizabeth Avenue. National Organizer Harrison of New York will lead the drive to organize machinists in the city sideline industry. He cites wage gaps and gains by organized trades as motive for joining. The meeting features speakers Robert Lackey Hartieon English Aarti Heyde and plans to broaden industrial union reach.
Max Brenner a Second Street saloonkeeper faced two indictments for selling liquor without a license and in Linden Township. He pled not guilty, posted $300 bail on each charge, and trial was set for June 7. Several other defendants, including James Fahey and Edward Burns, were arraigned on related charges and bail set.
From Ennis in Poughkeepsie, a New York to San Francisco trekker with bilatered feet and stiff legs left for Albany hoping to beat Weston’s walking record. He said his condition was as good as expected and he remained on schedule despite pain.
Manila on May 25 reports divers examining the sunken drydock. Officials have not yet stated the accident’s exact nature, but open valves controlled by electrical lines are cited as the primary cause. Naval officers acknowledge tampering by malicious persons would not be unlikely. The Dewey will be raised soon. it is believed to be seriously damaged.
Charlee E L Mullin bank cashier for Farmers and Merchants National Bank Mount Pleasant and Breinman were found guilty today by a Federal District Court jury on charges of misapplying 144 000 of bank funds. Mullin and Breinman were accused in the treacherous scheme during the trial in Pittsburgh.
The New York market showed sharp advances early but concessions pulled many leaders below yesterday's close. After fifteen minutes trading was irregular with dull tones through the morning. Government bonds remained quiet as investors faced a stagnant midday outlook.
Plainclothes officer arrested Jacob Bittner on a charge of peddling without a license. He appeared before Judge Mahos and was fined, paying the amount.
