Resentment over General Drake appointment by county

County foes in Union City protest the 1902 act appointing General Drake as supervisor over soldier burials. Grand Army posts claim the change risks removing long standing authority to furnish and maintain headstones and funerary care for dead comrades. A Monday meeting with Freeholders will probe why Drake, not a G A R member, was chosen and whether burial duties will stay with posts.

New Jersey Conservation Commission Reports Progress and Plans

The first annual report to Governor Fort highlights New Jersey's advanced natural resource program since July. It credits long legislative support and the State Geological Survey for topographic maps, watershed data, and surveys of land, minerals, forests, and water. It notes forest reserves and a $1,000,000 plus gain from forest protection, plus flood control, water supply, and coast inlet improvements. Future aims include reducing departmental overlap and fostering cooperation among Geological Survey, Agricultural Experiment Station, Water Supply Commission, and Health Board divisions. Interdepartmental coordination is emphasized, with examples like Bay Head dredging needing drainage avoidance.
