Thief ring leaders arraigned in Jersey City court

Laurie Volmer and Edward Fair were brought before Jersey City's Court of Common Pleas on multiple robbery charges. 1000 Women Saved From Terrible Death Fire at Workhouse Wing

Fire broke out in the womens wing of Winckwell’s Toland workhouse in New York on December 20. Prisoners tried to escape as flames swept the upper tiers and the roof collapsed. Tragic death announced from pulpit of Cherry Street student

Viola Anderson, 14, of 702 Payavémue and member of Cherry Street School's graduating class, died Sunday evening after illness. Pastor Rev W H Taylor announced the passing at Shiloh Baptist Church service, as family prepared funeral plans and awaited recovery hopes for another child.

Bradley elected Senate president in caucus vote

In a noon caucus the Republican members selected Senator William J. Bradley of Camden as president and Thomas J. Hillery of Morris as leader. Senator-elect Colby from Essex County arrived intending to bolt but remained aligned, following prior party moves in the House.

Fire destroys two New Jersey ferryhouses on riverfront

New York December 20 Northern winds drove flames from the Lackawanna and Delaware ferry waiting room to scorch the two ferryhouses and slips along Twenty third Street near the North River. The blaze, worsened by a defective alarm, gutted both structures with losses estimated up to a quarter million dollars. A ticket agent William Horner of the P. L. & W. sustained minor injuries while aiding in the evacuation. Repairs and traffic resumption were expected by later today.

Wall Breached as Coal Car Crashes Through Engine Room

A coal car in the yard of the Singer company crashed into the engine room wall, demolishing it and narrowly missing workers. The car stuck halfway through the two foot thick wall as spectators watched in alarm. A brakeman riding the car survived after the plunge, avoiding the foreman’s end.
