D. M. Scott of 811 Second Avenue appeared in City Criminal Court charging his wife with trying to poison him by adding carbolic acid to his coffee and whisky. He said she confessed she no longer liked him and planned to leave.
Thomas F Noble two years old of Kingston New York employed by Tice Towhiy Company aboard the tugboat BR B Little was injured when his bog cat caught in a loop of a hawser making the line taut at pier 6. A nearby boatmate freed the hawser preventing severe injury. Noble is at Alexian Hospital with a badly bruised leg and is expected to return to duty soon.
Telegraph report from Eastport Long Island notes the steamer Harburg grounded a half mile west of Bellport Station after fog. The vessel laden with deep clay from Finland, has wrecking tugs ready from New York. crew remains aboard the ship as life boats stand by at high tide for possible evacuation.
Telegraph reports in Philadelphia dated December 12 that two heavily laden trolley cars collided near Newtown Creek bridge by Gloucester. A panic among nearby riders ensued with several girls fainting and others attempting to jump into the creek, but bystanders restrained them and no injuries were recorded.
Telegraph notes a smallpox scare aboard a cruising fleet after a rapid voyage to Ceylon. The Colombe arrived four hours before the Mit to ferry a smallpox sufferer, with a view to medical assessment. The fleet, including heavy steamers, is en route to port tomorrow.
Police arrested two men after a late night incident at Krumer's store on First Avenue James Devine and another man were arraigned by the City Criminal Court. They faced 30 day detentions and were sent to custody following the proprietor reporting the disturbance.
Harry Danderlin confessed to stealing 300 dollars worth of leather from United States Leather Company Magnolia avenue. Charles Sellander of Elizabeth avenue, a Harrington Leather shipping clerk, arraigned in City Criminal Court and held for action of the jury on charges as accomplice. Parrot secured bondsman for Sellander.
The twentieth anniversary of St John’s Senor Chapter No 229 Brotherhood of St Andrew was marked in St John’s Chapel. Officers were elected for the new Young Men’s Club with C S Lewis as president and C Thayer as vice president. The Girls Club joined next Wednesday and a joint constitution was adopted. Refreshments followed.
Suisse financier Dr Gubrini, richest and most eccentric man in Switzerland, died at Lugano aged 95. He wore shabby clothes and guided tourists through his park as a gardener while receiving tips. He left just over 5 million dollars, mostly to charity, never married, and lived at the Ciani estate with two servants.
Mrs. George Carleton of Waukesha spoke to the Woman's Club and praised old friends like old coins. A compositor misread and printed an incorrect line about cows, changing the remark's meaning while the paper circulated in Milwaukee.
Richard Murphy twenty years old was found dead in his room at Hart's Hotel 300 Spring Street after gas leaked from a half open jet. Neighbors and employer Mr Cummings deem it an accident as stopcock loosened after flame went out. A defective chimney caused a small fire in the vestibule roof of Firet Baptist Church at Union Avenue and Prince Street. Firefighters found missing chimney bricks and a smoldering beam, with damage not exceeding 25 dollars. Elementary grades of Privry School are housed elsewhere in the church due to a prior fire, but services will proceed tomorrow.
New York Central tug and barge workers ended a three hour strike after a dispute over bi monthly wage payments and two Sundays off per month. The stoppage halted the fleet as crew members protested overtime discharge that sparked the walkout.
Chief August Gerstung of the fire department reports the Salt Water test at the Baker yesterday afternoon was partly successful and expects a complete demonstration within a week. The test aimed to show salt water mains from the Staten Island Sound could be used for firefighting.

Santa Claus Will make his headquarters Monday afternoon at Levy’s department store on Bandang Wall streets where he will distribute Christmas cards to children and take orders for dolls and toys. Also offering wholesale and retail Christmas trees and holly, wreaths, and greens from mountain forests. J. W. Akely advertises furniture and toys with a large display, and a meat market promotes highest grade meats and poultry.
President elect Taft weighs cabinet choices after a White House conference with Theodore Roosevelt. He may retain several current secretaries and plans to appoint Charles E. Magoon as Secretary of War after Philippine inspection tours. Taft also seeks a Western replacement for Interior, while Roots and Cannon influence key posts and tariff harmony with standpatters is seen as a sign of party peace. Taft and Mrs. Taft dine with Roosevelt. Taft to New York then Augusta, Ga, before inauguration.
The Board of Education reopens bidding for School II yard work after rejecting prior bids that exceeded $1,190. Architect Louis Quien revised the plans for a concrete wall steps and platform, with a special meeting called by President Reilly to discuss the project.
The Central road of New Jersey acquired a seventy foot wide strip of land along the railroad in Plainfield. The parcel lies between current railroad holdings and the Natural Jet Company plot. The deed, part of the Central New Jersey Land Improvement concern, was filed with the county registrar.

Arthur Cherry of Pearl Street was arraigned in City Criminal Court and ordered to the county jail for 30 days after his mother charged him with threatening her life. He had returned home drunk, drove her from the house, and was later taken to police headquarters. He was previously involved in a suicide attempt on the Ridge Street bridge after losing his job at Singer factory.
Frances Dippe, a Roselle produce merchant, captured 9 year old John Matsek after he and two other boys raided her wagon on Broad Street for pies and cakes. Matsek confessed at police HQ and said the gang planned nightly thefts, with Matsek acting as lookout.
The New York market opened with mixed results as Interborough Metropolitan and Reading showed strength while Smelting and steel issues slipped. Railroads moved small fractions, overall tone unchanged, with Vanderbilt interests noted among buyers. At the Fam Jersey Street crossing of the Long Branch Railroad a United States Express wagon driven by R C Miller and Henry Gerstang stalled on the track as an Atlantic express locomotive rounded the curve. The horse reared and two men escaped injury, with Miller spraining a foot and Gerstang jumping clear while a flagman freed the horse and wagon before the train passed.
