Special to the Journal Rahway Aug 17 Fifteen coal cars toppled and railway tracks wrecked after an axle failure near St Georges Avenue, tying up the Pennsylvania Railroad at Perth Amboy Junction. A tramp narrowly escaped grave injury as doctors freed him from pancaked steel. Three wrecking trains and up to 90 workers cleared 750 tons of coal and twisted rails, reopening service by 3 AM with trains rerouted via Central Railroad and extra cars.
Adolph Gabriel of New York, longtime Blatz Leather Company treasurer, lies near death with typhoid fever after an alleged shortage of 36 725 dollars found in his books. An attachment was issued by Justice Goff as banks and the firm seek recovery.

A servant girl at 27 Kanth Street, Mica Katie Smith, spilled a quart of benzine while lighting a lamp in a kitchen about 1:40 this morning. She was burned and flames frightened everyone as the fire spread briefly before neighbors extinguished it prior to fire department arrival.

Kint Springs Ark Aug 17 Sheriff Hemet was wounded in a desperate gunfight with three thieves. He killed one robber and pursued the other two as a battle erupted near the city theatre yard. Posse lines form as authorities hunt the remaining men.
The Elizabeth Board of Health sent a letter to B. Fischer of the Pennsylvania Railroad reporting improved daytime conditions but persistent night smoke near Walnut and Murray streets. A meeting was held with residents present and Fischer urged to attend the next session in September as the council seeks further relief.
County Detective John A. Gniutian arrived at night with Michael Spirling, arrested a week ago in Richmond VA, for allegedly stealing a horse and buggy from John Maloney Jr. in Cranford livery. New York August 11 The market opened with uncertainty after a firmer tone yesterday and rough trading.
