Aged Banker William P. Thompson Dies in Elizabeth

On the steamer Wilhelm der Grosse at Hoboken Mayor William A. Gaynor was shot four times by James J. Gallagher a discharged city employee. One bullet struck the mayor on the right side of the neck near the ear and Gallagher was captured and identified. The mayor was taken to St Marys Hospital and was conscious with no immediate danger as surgeons examined his wound.
