The Decorah Public Opinion argues Winneshiek county’s poor relief program emphasizes employment over charity. It notes a county supervisor, an assistant, and four clerical workers expanding outreach, with offices soliciting aid applications countywide and concerns over growing costs and dependence.
A Maiden Merit letter argues people should report burglaries and fires promptly while questioning charity practices. It states responsible citizens must act to protect life over belongings and suggests aid programs should require work in return. It also notes authority can be granted, but wisdom must be earned.
John Grover and Mabel Conner wed at West Union on Wednesday September 30 in a quiet ceremony attended by a few friends. The issue lists local events and people including new lumber purchases, canned pumpkins, a large 7 foot eagle shot by Gus Becker, a broken leg from a riding accident, travel plans for C T Capper and wife, and community visits across Clermont Ossian Dubuque and Decorah with various relatives and 4-H projects.
Elgin Falks tore down part of their barn south of town and rebuilt it. Clifton Kohler traveled to Postville with the Koev family for several days. Gus Gunderson and relatives visited St Olaf and the F. L. Sires home. I D Hendershott of Oelwein visited family here. L E Burgess and others from Newton Kansas arrived for a visit. Chicago trip with Century of Progress guests included Mr and Mrs Schori. Local outings included Frankville day trips to Ole Blockhus home and trips to Waterloo and La Porte City for Jiggs Day and Elgin Little German Band. Third Primary class at Methodist church enjoyed a farewell party hosted by Rev J J Snyder with Theresa Snyder and others attending.
Mr and Mrs George Vaughn spent Sunday with relatives in Arlington. Sena.
