Ensign Dorothy Jane Minihan daughter of Mr and Mrs Martin Minihan Elgin and Lieut Gaylon Souvignier son of Mr and Mrs Ed Souvignier Canton Cantonites wed Sept 22 at Sacred Heart Volga in a double ceremony Rev D T Noonan officiated with Ave Maria sung by Adolph Benson and Leo Cassutt. Both families hosted a reception for 45 guests.
Jacob Stuart Yearous son of Charles and Catherine Yearous was born Aug 7 1853 near Cleveland Ohio and died Sept 18 1945 at age 92 at his son’s Fayette home after his wife’s death. He was the second of nine children with four surviving siblings. The family traveled from Ohio to Iowa by planked or trail routes, choosing the planked road despite a high fare. He married Rebecca Doty on June 4 1879 at Clermont and they had twelve children, four of whom predeceased him. The Yearous family lived in Fayette and Clayton counties, celebrated 65th wedding anniversary in 1944, and Mr Yearous belonged to St Paul’s Methodist church in Elgin. Funeral services were held at the James home and Illyria church with burial in Illyria cemetery. His memory is cherished by children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many friends.

Elgin Study club met at Ida Thoma's home with fifteen members. Verna Mosby and Mildred Habeger read papers on the role of education in the postwar world. Clara Kuster and Bernice Falb named delegates to the West Union district convention, with Verna Mosby and Irene Kiple as alternates.
A Progress Club gathering Tuesday evening at the Mel Koher residence with Julia Smith as hostess drew nineteen members who shared hobbies during roll call. Betty Strauch and Mrs. Leota Turner read two articles titled What is your hobby and New Fun in Old Bottles. The next meeting is set for Monday evening October 8 at Mae Anderson’s home.
A 50 foot front movie building is planned for West Union between the Bocenstedt building and the Union office. Three old frame buildings will be razed next spring to make way. The brick and concrete structure will house a cinema on the main floor and offices above with a basement prepared for bowling alleys. Builders are Lawrence Bocenstedt of West Union and W H Scott of Nashug.
