T. H. Thorson of Elgin tied with J. C. Stemmer of Elkader as the two oldest pioneers to register at the Elkader Fair's first annual Pioneer Day. Both are 89. Frank L. Gitchell, 69, died suddenly from heart failure about 6:30 p.m. Friday. He was born in Center Point and survived by his widow, a son, three daughters, five grandchildren, and a brother, Charles Ig. Gitchell of Arlington. Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Christian Church in Arlington with interment in Center Point.
President Smith announced the purchase of the Sweet residence one block south of the college to serve as a music conservatory and fine arts studio. It will consolidate practice space, eliminating confusion from multiple rooms in College Hall during classes. The building is described as beautiful and well treed with nine large rooms plus halls.
Ten Allamakee county violators pleaded guilty before Judge H. E. Taylor last week and were fined a total of 3000 dollars. The offenses cited include selling beer on Sunday and illegal possession of liquor as the most common violations in the area.

The Agriculture Department announced free hot lunches for 5,000,000 school children in the coming year. The meals will come from supplies acquired by the Federal surplus commodities corporation as part of removing price-depressing farm surpluses from the market.
The St Pauls Lutheran junior choir of Postville performed its first concert in the church main auditorium on Sunday evening September 17. Organized since January, the 24 member group offered a balanced program of two and three part sacred music under director Mrs F Ludwig, with Marian Casten, Robert Overland and Gerald Schroeder as accompanists. Marian Casten and Nora Jorgenson assisted. Margaret Huebner sang baritone euphonium and Robert Overland played organ.
Twenty five chukker partridges, sent to Clayton county by the State conservation commission at the request of the Eskader St Olaf Conservation club, have been released in the territory near the Norway church.
The Winneshiek county fair at Decorah reports higher attendance this year and credits newspaper advertising in 13 towns, avoiding handbills and other media.
