Officials noted prayers began at 1 AM for the Jewish New Year and candles may have started the blaze.

Weather affects crop yields across regions and crops
The weekly crop summary notes cooler than ideal temperatures in northern districts and the lake region, with heavy rains harming Dakotas, Minnesota, and parts of the Carolinas, Wisconsin, and Alabama. Overall corn progress is mixed, oats and wheat harvest disrupted in the north, and cotton conditions variable though opening and picking proceed. Drought affects Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Texas, while boll weevils threaten fruit in some areas. Tobacco and potato prospects are favorable in many regions, with seed bed plowing slowed by dry soil in the upper Ohio valley and mid-Atlantic states.

Panama Unhealthful for Americans Says Postoffice Inspector
Postoffice Inspector Loeberman, in charge of the New England district, returns from a three months trip to Panama where he pushed U S postal service into the canal zone. He condemns the climate and sanitary conditions as unfavorable for American occupation. Gen. Davis reports 2 000 applicants for district jobs but urges patience until conditions improve. Yellow fever dysentery and tropical illnesses are widespread, with a death rate far higher than New Orleans. Workers labor in mud up to their knees and surveillance crews operate under severe disadvantage. At Culebra 800 Jamaica born laborers dig the canal trench, accustomed to the climate.
