Adano Major Joppolo and the town’s daily toil

An excerpt from John Hersey’s Adano follows American Major Joppolo as he governs Adano Italy. He balances rebuilding efforts and local compliance while navigating dialogue with townspeople and officers. The scene blends humor, duty, and cultural tension in the liberated seaport.

Veteran old man trades bravado for a pass to General Marvin

Major Joppolo weighs old Cacopardo's evidence and warns of Marvin's impatience. A testy gate encounter follows at the villa as the Italian hustles toward the Forty-Ninth Division, with the old man saluting and pushing toward a summons for the general. The scene shifts to local notes on a fatal dog accident, beekeeping honey deliveries, twin births, a bottleneck potato curiosity, a Persian cat boarding tale, and a vintage car claim from Maywood Illinois, all sketched in a brisk community-news voice.
