Dairy Cattle Congress Premiums Rise 1936
The premium list for all breeds of cattle has been increased for the 1936 Dairy Cattle Congress. The year’s dairy output is forecast as the smallest in five years while egg production per 100 hens on Aug 1 runs below last year and the six year average. Prices for hogs are expected to rise after a seasonal fall as supplies contract. Farmers with clover and alfalfa seed may see strong prices next spring. Town prices up from July to Aug. farm prices for corn, barley, rye, and soybeans are much higher than a year ago. Extension agents plan meetings to discuss corn substitutes and roughages for winter rations. Do not buy non-winter-hardy imported clover or alfalfa seed. Seed shortages in the Corn Belt push imported seed sales, but many will not endure Iowa winters. High produce prices favor storing vegetables and fruit in outdoor caves or basements with proper humidity and temperature control. Best storage is 36 to 42 degrees for most vegetables. With corn high, poultry should substitute small grains like ground oats and barley in growing and laying rations, and a sample ration for chicks is given.
