Many Ottumwa and area residents visit, move, or retire
A long list of local social calls and travels fills the week. Ottumwa couples the Kiple and Deprenger families visited relatives in Conrad. Edwin Frieden joined his mother in town before returning home to Conrad. Weibel and family left for Chicago after visiting relatives in Sumner. Christine Schori broke her ankle and is in a cast at her daughter’s Hawkeye home. Bovis replaces the bookkeeper role at Torkelson’s Garage. Numerous visits by Joss, Obye, Nelson, and Muehlethalers, plus arrivals from Decorah, Dubuque, and Cedar Rapids fill the area diary. School staff returns, housing and remodeling projects continue at Elgin.

Rural carrier trades in Jeep for bad weather mail runs
Sheldon Boyle a rural carrier on route 2 purchased a Jeep to speed delivery on bad roads. He has progressed from horse to model A Ford to Jeep for use during winter weather. Ray DeSart and Chas Feller, just back from a business trip to near Bismarck North Dakota, report very good crops of corn and small grain in that region. Western Minnesota crops also look good. This marks seven straight years of good crops in North Dakota. A leghorn hen at the Edgar Umbenhower farm near Chariton laid a perfectly shaped egg, nine and a half inches long and eight inches in circumference, weighing seven ounces.
