Brief History of the Clermont Lutheran Parish
The Clermont Lutheran congregation organized on July 12, 1851, under Rev. C. L. Clausen and Rev. Nils Brandt. Through 1904 the parish expanded from Clermont and nearby settlements to form the Clermont and Highland parish, with Clermont’s church built in 1876 and a new church completed in 1916 costing 16,000 dollars. Pastors included O. Waldeland, G. C. Gjerstad, Jacob Tanner, Peder Dreyer, J. Theo. Bursett, C. H. Hjortholm, and G. Gunsten. The East church added ground and cemetery acreage, spending about 6,000 dollars for improvements. The 85th anniversary marks a long, active ministry exceeding 800 members. Maryon Halvorson began teaching duties at Shell Rock after finishing fifth grade coaching duties.
