Mixture of Grasses Best for Waterways
Several grasses suit planting along waterways to curb gullies. Reed canary grass roots well if planted in moist soil in late August or early September before freezes. Bromegrass has success in western Iowa waterways, timothy in nonwestern areas, redtop in the southeast, and bluegrass where rainfall is ample. Mixtures outperform single grasses except in western Iowa where brome is best.
