Morrison notes no Indians from Pillager bands joined the Pillagers this summer after the deputy warden was killed.
The Virden region reports fourteen deaths from Wednesday’s violence at the Cheaga Virden Coal company mining operations. An estimated twenty others wounded remain, with emergency injuries not far from those figures. The coroner’s inquest brought no significant new evidence amid ongoing disputes over labor and resettled workers.
A Chicago & Alton special train departed from Springfield on October 1 carrying four companies of the Sons of Veterans and Troops A and C of Chicago and B of Bloomington First Units cavalry. Maj. W. G. Young of Chicago commanded the cavalry.
Mrs Sherman wife of former Secretary of State John Sherman suffered a stroke of paralysis this morning at her K street home in Washington. She lies in a critical condition with the right side affected and unable to speak though briefly conscious at times. Doctors W W Johnston and Frank Wyatt attended and remained with her through the day and evening.
In Rome on October 15 Great Britain Russia France and Italy rejected the Porte's proposed Crete modifications. An identical note was sent to the sultan in Constantinople demanding Turkish troops leave Crete within the specified deadline. Turkish forces move baggage to Suda Bay awaiting embarkation on ships already dispatched from Constantinople.
A Canton dispatch reports the will of George D. Saxton dated last April naming his sister Alys C Barber as sole heir and directing that after her death the estate be shared among five children George Mary James John and Ida Barley with Mrs Metriley receiving nothing. Gen Greene ordered to join Gen Lee in command of a division in the Cuban campaign after seeing action at Manila.
At the grand encampment of the Knights Templar officers were elected. Louisville, Kentucky was chosen as the site for the next conclave. The meeting noted October 15 as the date for the gathering in Louisville.
Olaf Olsha died at the Washburn depot after buying a ticket for Milwaukee. He had been treated by a doctor for an head abscess which likely burst, causing his death. Local officials reported the incident occurred October 15.

Madrid Oct 15. The cabinet discussed returning Spanish troops from the West Indies and evacuated Cuba. Ministers were reticent about decisions but decided to release Cuban prisoners confined in the Biscaya to permit their return to Cuba.
Five workers died and eleven were injured in a gas explosion at Colliery No. 4 in Tamaqua Pennsylvania. The mine, a major Lehigh Navigation Co producer with about 600 employees and large coal reserves, faced significant disruption after the blast.
