George Arnold 82, long estranged from his family, was found in a field three miles from Mrs. Warne’s home in Syracuse. He had eaten nothing but leaves and had no water, crawling on hands and knees after unsafely crossing fences with his wooden leg discarded nearby. He had recently lived in Toronto and had spoken of wanting to go home.

Attorney General Knox reported to the president and cabinet that under the law of 1806 any domestic company could land a cable on U S shores or in possessions. The president and cabinet were convinced no executive action is needed now and will review the issue further with the attorney general and in a congressional message.
Chicago October 1. Railway passes will not be abolished by December 31. The plan to wipe them out was killed at a meeting of executive officials of Western roads. They will reconvene November 6 to ratify yesterday's action.

In Madison Florida on October 12 John J Pert aged sixty a wealthy local figure was shot and killed instantly inside his home by his nephew Munroe William aged twenty five after a quarrel during an argument. Police report the incident as a domestic dispute ending in a fatal shooting.

In Connellaville La on Oct 16 three lives ended in a two foot diameter air shaft filled with deadly black damp. John Gilleland and his two sons James 11 and Winfield 26 perished after James fell in then the father rushed to save them. John Nicholson and John Baker survived after rigging air into the shaft. The rescue left two men in serious condition and Gilleland’s family mourns the loss.
Omaha dispatch says Patrick Crowe offered to surrender and face trial if the $60,000 reward for the Edward A. Cudahy kidnapping case is withdrawn. Chief Donahue rejected the offer but proposed waiving the reward himself. Crowe is described as tired of the hunt and willing to stand trial if reward removed, though fear of manufactured testimony exists. Ed A. Cudahy Sr expressed willingness to withdraw the reward to secure Crowe.
Lisbon telegraph reports two Italian anarchists arrested Friday evening in the corridor of the presidential palace in Rio de Janeiro. They were armed with revolvers and daggers. The motive is believed to be assassination of President Campos Batlles.

Count de Janutz and companions launched from Toulon at 14:16 Saturday night in an airship bound for the Mediterranean. The craft traveled slowly southward and was soon lost to sight, leaving the fate of the expedition unknown.

In Washington on October 16 1898 Capt Francis A Cook commander of the Brooklyn testified for the government at the Schley court of inquiry. He described the Brooklyn's maneuvers near Cienfuegos and Santiago and affirmed Schley's leadership while noting the coal concerns and near collision with the Texas. His frank account impressed the court and Schley's lawyers who may soon rest their case after Schley testifies.
The summer cottage of C H Spencer and Conk bay near Lake Park hotel burned at Gatclock last evening in Dewiraxend Minn. The family had spent Sunday there and left the unoccupied house to return to Minneapolis. The building was consumed with a loss of 4000 dollars covered by insurance.
Romag, an anarchist leader blamed for destroying public buildings, was seized in Stanislavow after a clash with police in Eastern Galicia.
