Dolomite Quarries Near Elgin and Postville Rise in Iowa
The Dolomite Quarries, about six and a half miles north of Elgin and four miles south of Postville on the Payette Clayton county line, grew from Judge Williams's idea in 1860. His family owns the land, developing the only known Dolomite quarries in America, supplying durable yellowish white stone for building, curbs, and monuments to cities across Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Managers plan to expand with a 1000 foot face, large saw mill, and new power from a gas engine, employing fifteen to thirty workers with weekly payrolls around 150 to 250 dollars.
