Tax Study Group Report to Gov Blue Iowa plan to raise taxes
The tax study group in Iowa submitted a comprehensive report to Governor Robert D. Blue outlining a package of proposed measures. Key ideas include keeping the personal income tax at 50 percent, adding a 5 percent sales tax earmarked for cities to aid liquor enforcement, exempting household goods up to 900 dollars, broadening the property tax base, taxing amusement operators, and shifting assessor duties to county level. The report also proposes taxing cooperatives and municipal light plants, taxing certain financial entities, extending tax to religious and charitable property used for profit, and ensuring state aid is tied to tax votes. Francis Johnson Terril chaired the committee with multiple state senators and representatives among its members. Thanksgiving recess announced for Upper Town University with return in December to allow veterans to be home for the holiday.
