The Rotary Clubs of West Union and Oelwein launch a county program during National Diabetes Week November 14 to 20 offering a diabetes test to every Fayette County resident for the price of a five cent stamp. Early detection aids treatment and aims to let victims live normal lives.
The Rotarians of Fryette County promote a diabetes screening program targeting about 600 unknown patients. Residents may obtain test kits at banks, drug stores, or through schools, complete the meal-influenced test, and mail samples for reading in West Union or Oelwein laboratories. Results stay confidential with notification by first class mail if positive.

Miss LaDonna Kay Lantz and Eugene Jacobson united in marriage at St. Pauls Methodist Church in a candlelight double ring service. The bride wore a silk faille gown with pearls and opaline, the couple will reside on Walnut Street in West Union.
Funeral services for Kenneth Ernest Larson aged 36 from Dubuque were held November 4 with services at Englehoff Funeral Home in Dubuque and at Elgin Lutheran Church officiated by the Rev Otten. Burial followed at Elgin Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Post Elgin.
Kenneth Larson, lifelong Elgin resident, served in the U S Army, married Marilyn West in 1953, with three children Allan Michael and Pamela. He worked at Dubuque Stamping and Manufacturing Co after living in Dubuque. Survived by Marilyn and four sisters, with a large circle of relatives expressing gratitude for the support.
The Social Hour Club gathered Thursday at Mrs. Louis Becker Sr. Fifteen members attended with a holiday recipe. Two guests, Pearl Peters and Mrs. Alice Kjosa, joined. A program committee for next year was appointed: Mrs. Howard Medberry, Mrs. Wm. Bennett, and Mrs. Harvey Paulson.
Robert L. Voshell of Wadena, son of Mr and Mrs Clarkie Voshell, begins Auto Body and Fender class in Omaha Nebraska starting November 1. He is a graduate continuing training in trade school program.
An advertisement from Valley High in Elgin touts Universal Trade School as among the Midwest’s largest mechanical schools. It lists programs in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Auto Body and Fender Repair and Auto Mechanics.
Elgin locals named callers visiting and social visits noted for the past week. Mrs. L O Reierson Mrs Mervin Anderson and Mrs Harold Opland are listed as callers. Mr and Mrs Paul Butikofer and Timmy and Mrs Anna Schuvbard visited Arthur Schneier Sunday afternoon. Mrs M J Blockhus attended a caller Friday afternoon of Mrs Agnes Gilson and Mrs Laura Olson.
A string of Saturday and Sunday visits unfolds across eastern Iowa. Lisbon hosts the Caspers family with the Lembke home, while Cedar Rapids and Maynard connect families including the Friederichs and Park households. Other clusters include Milborn Slater Calmar Aredale and Cedar Falls households hosting guests from Baltimore to Castalia.
