Items from November 8 1904 record residents and visitors heading to St Louis for the fair including Mr and Mrs Albert Schori and families. Others journeyed via Chicago, with several local residents visiting and social news such as a birthday surprise at the Harrington home and Bertha Mallwitz’s engagement. A Chicago to St Louis trip is mentioned along with farm house notes and a medical oddity involving Mrs Chas Lepic where an electric current revived her briefly.
The report notes birthday wishes extended to Mr and Mrs Leslie Cooley who plan to move back to town. It also recounts a Sunday outing with C S Halstenson and wife when a horse shied near a brush pile causing a spill. They walked home while bystanders gathered the robes and cushions from the buggy.
A 1934 letter from Wadena Iowa to the Elgin Echo criticizes unnecessary poor relief. The writer notes some aid recipients do not try to work while others who wish to work struggle to find jobs, arguing relief should be denied to those able to work. Death Row at Ft Madison penitentiary houses six cells with five occupied by death sentence prisoners. The piece notes a future legislative extension may be needed if executions lag, and suggests Iowa governor candidates campaign on economy and fewer pardons for condemned prisoners.
In moonlit night two miles west of Strawberry Point a bull escaped the Glen Hulbert cattle yard and was struck by John Humphrey of Elkader. His Ford was damaged after the collision. the bull was skinned and the car towed to Elkader.
Mrs. Axel Nelson of Fosston Minnesota reports a dry start followed by rains that saved all crops except hay. Moisture now looks good for next year. The area grows sweet clover for seed cash crops. She is sister to Mrs Geo N Schori and a former Elgin resident who still enjoys the Echo after years away.
Fayette county shows 17 percent non resident ownership of farm land, with 66 729 acres owned by non residents and 11 326 acres under foreclosure. Of 444 084 acres of farms, 76 055 acres are non resident owned or pending foreclosure, mainly by loan or insurance companies.
A public message urges maximum protection for schoolchildren amid deadly fires. It cites 25,000,000 pupils and notes past school fires killed many children, calling for a nationwide survey by the National Board of Fire Underwriters to improve school design and safety. It also references an unrelated note about John T. Anderson in Elgin after a year abroad.
