Death of Iowa centenarian Svend Houg ends long life
Svend Houg, longtime Clayton county resident and oldest local citizen, died Friday at his home near Clermont at age 101. Born December 4, 1814 in Aal Hallingdal Norway, he married Margit Groth in 1850. The Houg family immigrated to America in 1862, settling on the Hout farm, where he lived 64 years. Funeral services were held at Clermont Lutheran church with Rev. Tanner and Rev. Hjortholm assisting. he was buried beside his wife on the family lot. He leaves nine living children and many grandchildren and friends who mourn his passing as a well spent life.

Memorial Day Exercises in Elgin 1916 Program
Memorial Day program on Tuesday May 30 1916 at Elgin Opera House begins 1 30 pm with Higin Concert Band and orchestral music followed by school recitations verses and songs. A cemetery program features Elgin Concert Band prayers readings and wreath laying by Comrade Chris Baldwin and sixteen girls with honors.

Drowning Death of Ray Johnson at Local Swim Hole
Ray Johnson fourteen, son of Mrs Ida Johnson, drowned Tuesday evening at the south of West Union swimming hole while classmates and four high school teachers were on a picnic. Cramped after supper he sank. doctors from town could not revive him. The family grieves as his sister CeCe lia battles rheumatic illness. Funeral held today.

Elgin High School Class of 1916 Commencement Evening
The Elgin High School commencement exercises for the class of 1916 will be held at the Elgin Opera House on Friday evening June 2 at eight o clock. Dr H C Chambers of West Union will deliver the commencement address. No essays will be read this year. The class number is eight with three boys and five girls. They have completed the required course and are ready to begin their real work, with a music program included for an enjoyable evening. Please avoid any other gate for that date.
