Murder of John E. Sanderson Sparks County Rumors
Report from the Custer County Chief recounts the murder of John E. Sanderson by Ames Carland after a drunk quarrel over Sanderson's alleged treatment of Carland's wife. Sanderson, about fifty, died instantly from four close range gunshot wounds. Sanderson had a long local history of rough exploits yet was described as having good qualities. Also noted is a local Sunday school team game where younger players defeated older locals 12 to 7 amid uneven fielding and lingering stiffness from the match.
