Newport Kentucky May 18 The Scott Jackson case went to the jury at 10 AM after evidence including bloody clothes and letters. At 12:05 PM the jury found Jackson guilty of murder in the first degree and fixed the death penalty. Spectators kept silent, then applauded as the verdict was read. Jackson shown ashen faced, no relatives present. Pearl Bryan’s father and brother attended. A motion for a new trial was filed, Jackson claimed innocence and said Walling killed Pearl Bryan, while Walling said Jackson killed her. The prisoner is held by officers amid protests and low spirits.

Milwaukee May 15 The street railway strike is practically over with 155 cars in service, two more than usual, sustaining traffic on all lines. About 30 experienced men from Cleveland and 30 from Buffalo arrived, the latter in uniform. The company claims sufficient manpower to run lines regularly, though arrests were made for cutting wires on North avenue and for a strike grievance committee member.

The crossing at Footeville was obscured by hail and rain as the line Dakota express approached at about forty miles an hour. The engine struck the Lugsy and hurled the women and a buggy horse was killed and another impaled on a pole.

Humboldt, May 15. ME Winne, leading banker and wealthiest resident of Humboldt, hanged himself this morning. His wife’s sudden death and failing health sparked widespread distress. He was sixty years old.
