Peony Bloom Prospects and Grasshopper Threat in Iowa

Cool wet spring may foster armyworms and cutworms, with castor beans ineffectual for grasshopper control.

Grasshopper control and hog health tips for farmers

An experiment over three months tested at least 500 grasshoppers with several castor bean varieties. Poison bran mash remains the only effective grasshopper control. Farmers with excess corn acreage may sow alfalfa or sweet clover in June, weather permitting, with caution for weed growth. Hog necrosis outbreaks loom due to heavy rains and warmth. keep hogs on clean pasture as necro spreads in warm, wet barns, has no specific cure, and recovered hogs may spread disease. Good advertising is an investment.
