The Topeka Journal argues for a press moratorium as relief for a struggling industry. It warns newspapers must continue to publish despite lower advertising and cites the press’s public duty to report even in hard times. It imagines closing papers and radio to spark reader appreciation.
Rep Biermann voices opposition to federal funding for the nine foot Mississippi channel project. The Dubuque case shows little town benefit from such river works while suggesting funds could aid rail, paddling to Milwaukee. H B Duke of Bell Telephone visited Elgin last Wednesday afternoon.
Dr. 8 W Kuster sells half interest in his Elgin dental parlor to Dr. G G Cooley to open a second office in Oelwein with Kuster likely in charge. The Iowa Supreme Court reversed the Fayette County District Court in the W. J. Rounds case charged with lascivious acts with Clara Jene Buck. Rounds had been convicted, sentenced to Fort Madison for up to three years, served, and was released March 21 this year. The higher court finds him not guilty on the reversal.
A long truck trip details the Lincoln highway as the world’s longest street spanning over 3,800 miles from New York to San Francisco through eleven states. A Mason City trucker collected large rocks for a rock garden in Elgin and brainard area on a two day run returning for more.
Highland school district No. 2 sets a Friday May 29 program with a picnic dinner and a series of acts. Performers include Norma Nydegger Priscilla Erickson Charles Erickson and Robert Leuchtenmacher in skits such as Mothers Helper A Sick Poppy and Diadogue Tiny Tots Tea Party and Housecleaning Time.
The county auditor reports a new law cutting county township and town officers salaries effective May 1. Reductions include county treasurer auditor clerk from 1900 to 1700, recorder 1700 to 1500, supervisors from 5 to 4 per day, attorney 1400 to 1600, superintendent 1800 to 1600, clerks assessors 4 to 38 per day, deputy county officers capped at 60 percent of principal. Deputy roles vary with deputy treasurer clerk and auditor at 960, law allowing 1042, others lower except deputy sheriff.
