No Time to Neglect Hens Diet Says Iowa Expert
H A Bittenbender head of the Poultry Husbandry Department at Iowa State College warns laying hens must still receive grain and mash alongside greens to sustain egg production through spring. He urges animal protein from milk or meat and minerals like limestone bone meal oyster shell salt and charcoal. A suggested mash uses 200 pounds ground oats 100 pounds ground corn 60 pounds meat and bonemeal plus 4 pounds limestone 2 pounds bone meal 3 pounds charcoal and 1 pound salt. Spring flocks should get one and a half times as much grain as mash with typical consumption around 4 ounces daily per fowl.
