Prospects for Iowa Gubernatorial Race in 1944
A long lead time for the 1944 primaries sees Republican talk of possible candidates led by Lieut. Gov. Robert D. Blue and Speaker Henry W. Burma. Rumors place Harry Neary in the mix, with others like Harold F. Nelson and Senator Hugh Lundy mentioned. Hickenlooper appears poised to run unopposed for the Senate, shifting focus to governor and lieutenant governor races. Democratic gears show uncertainty with Guy M. Gillette declining another run, while Clyde L. Herring could pursue either the Senate or gubernatorial bid. Past nominees Kraschel and Valentine likely inactive, leaving a wide open field for new names as campaigns loom.
