Brainard is a small village in the hills where early settlers arrived in 1852 in covered wagons from Peters town West Virginia and Pennsylvania. They bought land from the government at two dollars an acre and built homes with timber, springs, and local resources. The community included carpenters cabinet makers and blacksmiths who built fog houses and rails for fences.
The narrative describes early Brainard, once called Tinker Town, where pioneers sought goods at McGregor, cattle roamed with bells, and a railroad through the valley spurred growth. A Brainard-built depot and store gave the town its name, evolving into a shipping center for wood, stone, cattle, and hogs, with maple syrup and corn farming shaping life before schools and churches emerged. By 1958 behind modern changes, electricity and highways reshaped the population, now descendants of the Crafts and Peters families.
